HOW TO SELL MEAT.
In a large town in the north of England on every Saturday a market is held, whore there are "all sorts and conditions of men" assemble from the humble corn-extractor to the flash Dr Puffstuff in his golden carriage. A certain part of the large square is allotted to the " knights of the marrowbones and clever." One of them a bit of a wag, may be heard speaking in a rapid manner that thoroughly succeeds in confusing those who have dealings with him. His prices are invariably paid, and this is how he does it : "Here you are, mum; here's some prime beef, the best in the marketonly 4| a pound. The weight of this piece mum 1 Just 3} pounds. This piece will come to—how much 1 Let me see—3J pounds at 4Jd a pound. Three fours are 12—3 ha'pennies are 3d; 12 and 2 are 14; quarter pound is of course, the fourth part—the fourth part of 14d is 4d—l4 and 4 are 18— 18d; that's Is Bd. Here you are mum, take it away."
