Sir G. Grey pave notice yesterday that he would, on next sitting day, introduce a bill to provide for the appointment of a Parliamentary Under* secretary of State, He also gave notice of a bill to provide for Justices of Peace for New Zealand and depondencies to be elected by the people, The annual meeting of tho Mastorton Investment and Building Society takes place this evening. This gathering will be of exceptional interest, as for the first time on record there is to be a oontest for the two vacant seats on the directory, A meeting of the Wairarapa Bifle Association Committee, which had been arranged to be held on Saturday, the 27th instant, was hold at the White Hart Hotel, Carterton, on Saturday last, September 20th, Captain Bennett in the chair. It was.decided to hold the first firing on tho 15th and 10th of October next, and it was also decided that the following programmo should be issued ;- Firstmatoh,2ooyards, 10shots; second match, 300 and 500 yards, 7 shots at each range; third match, 500 and 600 yards, 7 shots at each range; fourth match, 600 yards, 10 shots, Wimbledon target to be used throughout the firing. Entries will be received up to the 10th of October, Two sighting shots will be allowed at each distance at the rate of 6d each, Ammunition will be provided on the range at the rate of 9a per hundred rounds, The programme will be issued in tho course of a few days.
To-morrow afternoon a four horse brake will take a contingent of the Salvation Army from Masterton to hold a service in the' Town Hall, Greytown.

Mr W. Benton, of Featheraton, is the successful tenderer for the erection of a dwelling house for Mr D, McMaster, at Tuhitarala, The building is of the Gothic type of one storey, and will contain upwards of twenty rooms, all well fitted internally. There are no less than ten fireplaces.' The whole block covers a space of 77ft by 98ft. The Anpjo-New Zealander, to hand by yesterday's mail, says Sir John Hall would leave Liverpool about the middle of August for New Zealand. Sir John visits Canada and the United States, and will then proceed to San Francisco, where he will embark on September 27 by the mail steamer for New Zealand, Lady Hall and family will remain, in England until the return of Sir John. In the House yesterday Mr Pearson aeked the Government, if it waß their intention to readjust the railway tariff, with a view to a substantial reduction on grain rates before the next season ? In replying, the Minister for Public Works said the Government recognised that the railway tariff required entire reclassification and readjustment, The Estimates as referred to in the Financial Statement, were based upon the tariff as at present existing, nnd the Goverement would not be able to touch the matter this session, They would, however, go into it thorouhly during the recess, and hon. members would see that it would be some time before any ohapge could be made.
