The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1884. THE FINANCE DEBATE.

" Some men are born great, others have greatness thrust upon diem," but New Zealand M.H.R.'a are prone to thrust greatness on themselves. There are now two parties and two leaders in the House, and the despatch of busiuess is materially promoted thereby. Why Mr Moss should have placed himself in the position of leader of an opposition to the Ministry and moved an amendment on thcFinaucial Statement, is probably expkiuod by the tendeuoy of M.H.K'b to thrust greatness on thomselveiJ, Wc cannot expect Major Atkinson or his party to support his amendment, and he only ombarrasses the business of thu Houso by putting himself in the front. Sir Julius Vogel has the colony at his back to entry his financial proposals. Of course it has beon Major Atkinson's busiuess to criticise them as loader of th'j opposition, but wo do not suppose that the late Premier intends to do more than this. We regret to notice that Sir Julius Vogel did not receive 1 Major Atkinson's comments on the Financial Statement in quite a proper spirit. He made a scurrilous and ungenerous attack upon the leader of the opposition which is tobe deprecated, To represent Major Atkinson as " a baby in finance," and as one who has committed actions of a questionable character, is going 100 far. The colony has faith in Major Atkinson possessing bo'h ability and integrity, and Sir Julius Vogel simply blunders when ho impugns cither the one or the other. It is about time that the debate on the Financial Statement ceased. The House, as well as thu country, is prepared to accept Sir Julius Yodel's proposals. If any real fight takes place, it will be over the Public Works Statement and not on the proposals of tho Colonial Treasurer.
