We wonder who supplies, our contem' porary, the Woodville Examiner, with itß Wairarapa fictions ? Nothing can be be more absolutely, false than the follow" ing paragraph " The Wairarapa County Council are moving ,in the matter of induaing the Government to open up the land in Forty-Mile Bush for settlement, They have, however, other .objects ia view, and they would like to get. into their owo hands the money to be Spent in opening op the roadß through the'new, blocks. This is very ibgeniooß idea for a body oomposed *for a great part of men'interested in gigantic land speculations, We trust the Government will never admit of suoh a' ridiculous idea, and so play intothehndsof the' BeethamBuchanan clique, who have never shown tbemselreo the friends' of genuine settlement." .'
A meeting ot the Wairarapa Jockev Club is to take place at the White Bart Hotel, Carterton, next Saturday afternoon, when the principal business for consideration will be Mr H.Grace's- proposal to rescind the rule passed at a general meeting held in May. 1883, to meet what is commonly called the "hack difficulty." Mr Grace proposes to substitute in liou thereof the following rule, "That any horse racing as a hack at any meeting of the Wairarapa Jockey Club after having ever raced as a racehorse, shall be permanently debarred from racing for other than hack, races at any meeting of the Wairarapa Jockey Club." The proposed new rule differs from the original in, that its operation is restricted to meetings of the Wairarapa Jock Club, the proposer thinking that , other clubs oan protect themselves similarly if they think necessary. If this rule is passed, horses j that were formerly disqualified under the old rule (for racing as hacks after being race horses) will be again eligible to raoo at the Wairarapa Jookey Club meetings, and Mr Grace's proposed rule oan only affect them or any others if they race as hacks after competing as racehorses at a meeting of the Wairarapa Jookey Club, We are indebted to Mr Waleb, the officer temporarily in charge of the Masterton telegraph office lor the accurate and punctual telegraphic report of the Financial Statement which appears in another column.

The question of exempting New Zealand newspapers ffoin postage has recently been raised. A total exemption would be a serious drain on the postal revenue, but a reduction of rates from a halfpenny to a farthing would not materially affect the exchequer, while it will go a long way towards meeting the wishes of the promoters of th 6 remission.
