Alcholism is rapidly increasing in the United States, Medical science so far lias failed to even check it. But why J In advanced stages, where the disease is deep-seated and the nervous system has given out, there is an, abnormal excitemeut of the imagination which leads the patient to fancy all kinds of curious and .disagreeable things. He sees anacondas and puff adders making free with his boots and other appendages, and is afflicted with visions of rats and other objectionable vermin. He cannot sleep; he is the victim of alcoholic insanity, and his condition is deplorable indeed. If.M, Pasteul can discover a remedy for this curse of the. human race he will confer a boon indeed. If we understand the great scientist's method aright, it is to produce by successive inoculations a variety of vivus of so tame a character that it will instantly neutralise or modify the poison. Having vaccinata man suffering from the worst form of the disease with vims taken from a real or imaginary snake, he would go on vaccinating until he got to a temperance lecturer or perhaps a . .moral and respectable pump. He would then take the virus so obtained and apply it to a patient afflicted with-rats. The disagreeable symptoms would at once disappear, and, what is more remarkable still, the desire for more alcoholic absorption would disappear also.
