In tha House Mr O'Oalughan gave notice .to ask the Government in view of small pox in Australia whether they would take steps as to the advisability of providing for compulsory re-vacoina-fcion.
Mr Holmes gave notice that a committee be apponted to consider the lime and circumstances connected with the Atkinson Government accepting tenders for the Greymouth-Mson Creek .Railway and Catlins River .Railway.
Sir G. Grey gave notice of his intention to introduce, an Act to amend the Criminal Procedure, nnd also the Justice of Peace Act.
Replying to questions the Government said they would not make any change in reference to the administration of educational lands this session. The Government could not see their way to amend the Roads and Bridges Construction Act so as to provide funds for irrigation works by county councils. Tb.a Government communicated with the Engineer in charge of the Upper Manawtitu bridge contract damaged by floods, and no further delay would be experienced. The Colonial Treasurer said notice had been given to pay off tk balance
outstanding on tire 5.30 per cent debentures. From the correspondence of the Atkinson Government ho saw they intended, as opportunity offered, to make further inscription of inscribed public debt. A large annual saving would be made of consolidated loan if 1867 and £3,500,000 of 10.40s were inscribed at 4 per cent,
Replying- to Mr Holmes, Mr .Richardson said a large quantity of imported railway materials were of rotten iron, and cost nearly as nj'uch to repair as thsy could be made for in the colony, the matter was being considered by the Government, so as not, if possible, to allow any loss to fall on the colony.' The Nelson Greek railway had not been taken up by the contractor owing to an error in his schedule.
The Imprest Supply Bill of £150,000 was passed through all its stages. On the motion for appointing tho Public Accounts Committee Mr Moss movcd-That no Ministers or ex' ministers should have a seat upon it. The ninendmsnfc was lost and the original motion carried.
, A committee was'appointed ta consider and report on the best means of promoting trade with the South Sea Islands.
On Mr Richardson's motion for a committee; of enquiry into the best route for the North Island main trunk railway Mr Lake moved that the com-' nnttee consist of seven members, and all from the Middle Island. After a long discussion the amendment was carried oh tho voices. At the evening sitting Mr RichardSON moved that Messrs Ferj-us, Fulton Gore, Larnach, Montgomery, White' nnd tho mover be a committee to enquire into the northern railway line agreed to. The Foreign Companies Bill and Bankruptcy Act Amendment Bill were read a second time. The Mortgages Release Extension Bill passed through Committee, and a third reading was ordered for Tuesday next. J On a motion that the Plurality of Votes Bill-be committed, Mr Harper moved an amendment that it be committed that day six months; On division the original motion was lost by 26 to 25. The Bill was therefore rejected, :':■ The .House rose at 12.40 a.m.
