TO THE BUEGESSEa OP MASTEttTON. LADIES AND. GENTHEMEN,-The following nre tl]e views I hold on some of the questions now beforo tho public:The most prominent, on-account of recent sickness, isjdrainago. This is a most important question, and could it bo carried out m a aatisfac.tory manner without materially increasing the rates it would have my warmest support. But I am afraid, to bo carried out in an efficient manner, it will prove to be utterly beyond our present resources, A largo supply of water with good pressure, would be needed to flush the drains,'otherwise they would become stagnant, thus aggravating the evil they were intonded to remove. Another great difficulty will be tho objections of landowners having river frontages to the pollution of tlio water by sewage, thereby giving riso to ondless lawsuits. The only practical remedy I see without largo cost is a thorough periodical inspection of premises by the officer employed lor that purposo, with full power to enforce cleanliness, the substitution of Abysinian pipes for open wells; and in cases of dangerous epidemics to isolate the persons infected, A high pressure water supply is too costly, and for household purposes is not needed, we having a pure supply under our feet, easily obtainable by driving pipes. But for Are prevention a supply is badly ueeded, and could be obtained from tho, creek behind Mr Cole'B house, at a cost of a fow hundred pounds. A steam fire-engine is also wanted, but will probably not bo obtained until many tiroes its valuo is sacrificed by fire. Gas should be taken iu hand by local enterprise as far as possible, and 1 will do my best, not by talk; but in a mote practical mauner to make _ it a success." The size of the Borough if at all possible should be considerably reduced, cuttng nut farm lands that should never have been included, It is unjust to the faimeis, and retards the progress of the the town proper." Street' construction should not be neglcoted but puehed on with during the summer months, Yours, &0,, 1782 James Muib. TO THE RATEPAYERS OF THE BOROUGH Oi) 1 MASTERTON. T ADIES AND GENTLEMENHaving been requested to allow myself to be nominated for a ec :t at the Council, and finding I will have sufficient time at my disposal, I have much pleasure in responding and soliciting your suffrages at tho approaching annual election. If returned I can only assure you that I shall ondeavor to expend your rates on works of utility, and in other respects I shall strive to promote the prosperity of the Borough by helping, as far as practicable, every useful movement, lam, &c, ; i; ' : '." 1773 THOS. P. GIEDWOOD. -
TO THE RATEPAYERS OF THE BOROTJGHOFMASTERTON, T ADIES AND GENTLEMEN. -In *~* response to a large and influentia requisition I have much pleasure in offering my services as your representative. The following are my views on some leading looal questions: - Gas.—lf possible should be supplied by a looal co-pperativo consumers company, without Wellington or any other outside assistance, Dkainacie, mo .-A small loan would, I consider, be necessary for a drainage and sewage scheme, so that the public health may be proteoted. The powers of the Sanitry Inspector should he increased and a public scavenger appointed. Water Supply.—Masterton is so wel supjlied with water that an expensivo schemo is unnecessary. For fire prevention the Brigade need encouragement rather than an increased supply of cold water from the Coupdl. Streets,—The streets in the outlying parts of the Borough have not received the attention they deserve. Those on the schedule already published by the Council Bhould he completed at once, Borooth OyERDBAFT.-This I would deavor to wipe off and save three to four per cent interest by raising a moderate loan, If timo and opportunity permits I intpnd to invite you to meet me, and lay my view on these and other questions more fully before you, I am, Lsdjts and Gentlemen, Yours Most Obediently, 1773 WALfER RAPP, TO THE BURGESSES OMASTERTON. -" request of numerous Ratepayers I beg resnectfully to oifor myself as a candidate for the office of Councillor at the forthcoming election. If elected I shall do my best to promote the interests of the Borough by attending as far as practicable to public works of general utility without increasing the liability of the ratepayers. I trust that my long residence and the fact that my interests are completely bound up with those of the Burgesses, will prove a sufficient passport to your confidence, I have the honor to be, Your Obedient Servant, 1772 K.M, GALLOWAY.
