Beetham, M.H.R. Also to draw attention to the enhanced cost of maintenance owing to traffic with railway works, painting out that without assistance from the Government the road could not be kept open. ■ It was also arranged to ask permission to expend money on repairing the ! Waipoua and Waingawa .Bridges in anticipation of an application which would be made under ;the Roads and I Bridges Construction Act. On the motion of Cr Mackay it was resolved to ask the Government to place £4OOO on the estimates for the purpose of constructing the road between Masterton and Castlepoint on the grounds of the contributions made bv the district to the land revenue ; ; that the district had not received back its fair share of expenditure ; that the traffic required the whole of the road to be metalled, and that the settlers were unable to bear the cost ef this; that this distriet does not share in the benefit of railway construction, but would feed the Wellington line if the road were completed. The Chairman having introduced the subject of opening up of Crown Lands, a discussion ensued as to the. advisability of selling these lands at once or tapping them first with roads. It was resolved to urge the Government to place a sufficient sum on the estimates to open up the greater portion of the Crown Lands in the northern part of the County. The Clerk reported that he had engaged a horse and cart to convey passengers over the Waipoua, and his action was confirmed by the Council, The hours of this service were fixed from 8 a.m. to 0 p.m daily. The following instructions were given to the engineer That in all cases uhere the traffic on the County road is interfered with by slips or otherwise the engineer have authority to make such provision as he thinks necessary to restore communication; that the engineer be authorised to erect a light foot bridge at the Waipoua.
A bridge injured at Mauriceville South was authorised to be repaired.
