MASTERTON LODGE, 1430., E.C. REGULAR monthly meeting, MONDAY, September Bth Masonic Hall, Bannis-ter-street. Lodged tiled at 8 p.m. By order of the WM. E. J. FITTON, 1781 Secretary. BOROUGH OF MASTERTON. rpHE Candidates for Municipal honors X • invite the Ratepayers to meet them in the THEATRE ROYAL, On MONDAY evening, September Bth, at 8 o'clock, when vaiions public questions, including gas, drain lge, water and river pro-, tection will be considered. All invited, CRICKET. A MEETING of persons interested in Cricket will be held on TUESDAY EVENING NEXT, September 9th at the Fire Brigade Station,' for the purpose of forming a "Tradesman's Cricket Club." Chair to be taken at 8 o'clock, Officers and members of tho Maslerton Cricket Club respectfully invited to attend, 1780 TO THE BURGESSES OP MASTERTON. Ladies and gisnthiSmen,— The following are the views I hold on some of the questions r now before the public The most prominent, on accennt of recent sickness, isjdrainage. This is a most important question, and could it bo carried out in a satisfactory manner without materially increasing tho rates it would have my warmest support. But I am afraid, to bo carried out in an efficient manner, it will prove to be utterly beyond our present resources. & large supply of water with good pressure, would be needed to flush the drains, otherwise they would become stagnant, thus aggravating the evil they were intended to remove, Another great difficulty will be the objections of landowners having river frontages to the pollution of tho water by sewage, thereby giving rise to endless lawsuits. The ouly practical remedy I see without large cost is a thorough periodical inspection of premises by the officer employed lor that purpose, with full power to enforce cleanliness, the substitution of Abysinian pipes for open wells, and in cases of dangerous epidemics to isolate the persons infected, A high pressure water supply is too costly, and for household purposes is not needed, we having a pure supply under our feet, easily obtainable by. uriving pipes, But for fire prevention a supply is badly needed, and could bo obtained from the creek behind Mr Cole's house, at a cost of a few hundred pounds. A steam fire-engine is also wanted, but will probably not be obtained until many times its valuo is sacrificed by fire, Gas should bo taken in hand by local enterprise as far as possible, and I will do my best, nut by talk, but in a more practical mauner to make _it a suom The size of the Uoronijli if at all possible should be considerably reduced, cuttng out farm lands that should never have been included. It is nujust to.the faimers, and retards the progress of tho the town proper, Street construction should not be gegleijted but pushedon with during the summer months. Yours, ke„ 1782 James Mdir.
TO THE RATEPAYERS OF THE' BOROUGH OJ) 1 MASTERTOiY. AND GENTLEMEN— Ilaving been requested to allow myself to be nominated for a ee.it at the Council, aud finding I will have sufficient time at my disposal, I have much pleasure in responding and solioitinEr your suffrages at the approaching annual election, If returned I can- only assure yon that I shall endeavor to expend your rates on works of utility, and in other respects I shall strive to promote the prosperity of the Borough by helping, as far as practicable, every uaeful movement. I am, <4c„ 1773 THOS. P. GIEDWOOD. TO THE RATEPAYERS OF THE BOR. OUGHOFMASTERTON. T ADIES AND GENTLEMEN. -In response to a large and influentia requisition I have much pleasure in offering my services as your representative. The following are my views on some leading local questions !- Gas. —If possible eJjoji'd be supplied by a local co-operative consumers company ) without Wellington or any other outside assistance. Dbainaoe, sic.—A small loan would, I consider, be necessary for a drainage and sewage scheme, eo that the public health may be protected. The powers of tha Sanitary Inspector should be increased and a public scavenger appointed.
Water Supply.— Masterton ia so wel supi lied with water that an expensive snheme is unnecessary, For lire prevention the Brigade need encouragement rather than un increased supply of cold water from the Council. Streets,—The ttreets in the outlying parts of the Borough have not received the attention they deserve. Those on the schedule already published by the Council Bhould be completed at once. Bohotjgh Overdraft.—This I would endeavor to wipe off and savo three to four per cent interest by raising a moderate loan. If time and opportunity permits I intend to invite you to meet me, and lay my view on these and other questions more fully before you. I am, Latlita nnd Gentlemen, Yours Most Obediently, 1773 WALTER RAPP, TO THE BURGESSES OF MASTERTON. Ladies and gentlemen,-At the request of numerous Ratepayers I beg respectfully to offer myself as a candidate for the office of Councillor at the forthcoming election, If elected I shall do my best to promote the interests of the Borough by attending as far as practicable to public works of general utility without increasing the liability of the ratepayers. I trust that my lone residence and the fact that my interests are completely bound up with those of the Burgesses, will prove a sufficient passport to your confidence. I have the honor to be, Your Obedient Servant, 1772 11. M.GALLOWAY. TO THE RATEPAYERS OF THE BOROUGH OF MASTERTON. IN accordance with the wishes of a number of latep ay hat [ should, take ijiy psrtjri the conduct of municipal affairs] I , offe* my!
