The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1884. OUR NEW CABINET.

We approach the contemplation of our new Ministry with mixed' feelings. We are almost afraid to ask ourselves of what materials it is compounded and whether it is. a wholesome tipple, Stout and Vocjel are both' good men, but nature never meant them to amalgamate.. like bears and lions it is their duty, to growl at and fight one another. If, as the poet sings, "It is their nature to," it is extremely probable that they will soon tire of hugging one another and begin to snarl and bite, It is difficult to account for the piesenco of some men in the new Ministry. Why, for example, should Reynolds be a chosen vessel. We ■know not, but we suppose that every dog must have his day, and that Mr Reynolds' day happens to have come round, We have often wondered what use some politicians were in this world, but we begin now to understand that they are capable of serving a practical purpose—Cabinet .Ministers can be' made out of them! . The selection of Hon. P. A. Buckley for office will be regarded by that gentleman's personal friends as " a noble call," but we think his appointment is hardly fair to his. comrade and companion the Hon. J... .'Martin. : ' These two M.L C.'b have been like Saul And Jonathan, and if one if, to be placed ,on : tlio Treasury benches the other "ought to have been put there, Of course Mr Buckley is the more sh«yy,qfi,he twain, : but then' Air MAsw in practical maftera ia InV superior, and, we feel certain, that'Mr Buckley wont,', got -on • without" hin " ckum." Then' »-e have.. another' liberal fletlgling 'in Mr TolW Sir George, Grey has permitted 'this legal gentleman to : 'enter the 'Cabinet 1 w, 'of course,-a 'mystery,, bflt we may be sure that it is with some benign intention of bursting it up.' There ig- | every reason at least to believe that in Mr Tole a Jonah has . been shipped; To Mr .Richardson no one.will object;' He is supposed to be a specialist in his own department, and of no useoutside of it. .Mr Ballanoe is another hope of the liberal party, It has riot yet been realized, but let ub trust that it may be, When he left Sir Oeobqe,Grey'sMinistry, or rather- was forcibly ejected therefrom, he was laughed at from one; end of the colony to the other.. We questiqfc whether he has got over this episode yet, and can- pose himself as a Cabinet Minister ought to do. The Cabinet, taken as a whole, is a queer one, arid, it.it remains in power over a month, it will owe its existence for Buch a : prolonged period more to its luck than to its merit,
