During the gale that was raging last week in Carterton a tree fell aoross a team of bullocks working in the bush of Messrs Booth, fatally injuring one of them, and, indeed, the rest had .a very narrow escape.

We have had submitted for onr inspection an inlaid card table made by Mr W. Rising, of Carterton. The design is very tasteful, and the workmanship, as far as the inlaying goes, as near perfection as anything we have seen in New Zealand.

The Rev. L. M, Isitt delivered his lecture on ''Gordon" in the Wesleyan Church Carterton. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Mr Stuart.

Wardell R.M.,' at the Courthouse this morning with assaulting his wife Caroline, The acoused, a stout railway hand, admitted the soft impeachment, but contended that he only " wielded the rod" when under the influence of liquor, The wife said her husband was good to her except when tipsy. He then knocked her about and frightened her. She .did not wish him locked up but simply bound over to keep the peace for a twelvemonth. Tho Court gave the acoused an hour's grace in which he might find a Surety or make some arrangement which would he a guarantee for his future good behavior. A meeting of the general committee of tho Wairnrapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society was held in the Council Chambers Carterton, on Saturday August 30th, for the purpose of receiving report of Bub committee appointed to ■ canvass for subscriptions for special prize list, Present—Messrs W. 0. Buchanan (Chairman), Boys, N. Grace, J. Reynolds, A. Matthews, H. Braithwaite, H. E, Bunny, Anderson, P. Taucred, and R, R. Armstrong. The minutes of the former meeting were retd and confirmed. The nomination for the eleotion of three Councillors in the room of Ora Oaselberß, Gapper, and Price, who retire by effluxion of time but are eligible for re-election, takes place at noon to-morrow, Tuesday September 2nd, at the Counoil Chambers,

Messrs Lowes & lorns held a sale at Woodville on Saturday last. The yardß were not very well filled with stock, although some good buyers were present. The flooded state of the Manawatu and other rivers prevented several parties getting their stock in. However, those yarded sold readily at fair rates, and proved that cattle had an upward tendenoy. The saipe firm of auctioneers conducted a sale of drapery & for an Auckland firm during the afternoon, the attendance at that being large and bidding spirited.

Stuokey of Te Rangitumau, Masterton, having found that the Here-, ford'breed of cattle does especially well al bis place,, decided Borne time baok to increase his heard by procuring twenty two heifers and cuws from the Auckland Stud Company, These cattle arrived yesterday by the's.s, Tarawera from Auckland, and waa slung out and put into trucks, fortunately without mishap, at the Bailway Warf, to be sent up lo Masterton by rail, A good portion of them are got. by the celebrated bull Horace, and some of the cows are in oalf by the same, Another fire has occurred near Greytown on Saturday night between seven and eight o'clock, the people of Grey town noticing a glare over Papawai Borne ten or a dozen started for that place when they discovered the fire to bo Mr John Skeet's dwelling house dose by. From what we can ascertain Mr and Mrs Skeet were from home leaving one of their daughters to put the children to bed, After doing bo she went into another room to do some household work when she heard a orackling noise in the childrens' bedroom whioh was upstairs, On entering the room she discovered it in flames'. She immediately gave the alarm when the neighbors, mostly Maoris came to her assistance, and nearly atl'the furniture was saved, Mr Skeet was not insured, and estimates his loss at something over £2OO.
