MUSEUM.

A public meeting was held, last night in 1 the Institute (Mr Papworth in the chair) to consider the ways and means of raising' funds for starting a museum inMasterton, . Mr R. Brown was appointed Secretary. Mr Hogg suggested that periodical lectures should be given in the Institute, and he had no soubt ablo speakers would willingly volunteer for such an object. Mr Stout had promised to visit Masterton, and he might be written to, to ascertain if ho would carry out that promise, and at what date.

Mr Bacon said he had'interviewed some of the Masterton Amateurs, and they lad expressed their willingness to assist in an entertainment.'

The Secretary thought an exhibition of fine arts, curios,.and local industries in the Institute upper room, to he kept open during "certain hours of the day and each evening for a week or two, and a small charge made for admission, would be one very good method of raising funds. The Chairman Said the first thing the meeting should do, would be to appoint a Committee. Mr ft. Brown moved—That a Committee of. Ways and Means be appointed for the purpose of raising funds for a museum by a series-of lectures, exhibitions, entertainments, or other methods. ~. Mr Rapp seconded the motion which was carried. Mr Hogg said the idea in connection with au exhibition was to fix up counters or tables round the room and obtain the loan of .paintings, curios, photos, local industries, and specimens of various sorts for exhibition. No doubt the services of the String Band could be obtained, and a piano loaned, and there were many vocalists who would favor them in getting up a sorb of promenade concert. This would be a pleasant change in the shape of entertainments, and if kept open for a week or two the cost would be small and the returns at a small charge of Is for admission would no doubt be satisfactory. Mr Lowes thought the idea a good, one and arrangements could be made for lectures and entertainments. He thought the mover of the resolution should name the Committee. The following gentlemen were then appointed a Committee with power to add to their number, Messrs Renall, Lowes, Brown, Rapp, Williams, Gardner, Chennells, Kemper, Bacon, Hogg, Freeth, Beetbam, Beard Gant, Meredith, Parsons, Isitt, Paige, Fulton, Tracey, Dalrymple, Keisenberg,. Bish, Muir, Littlejohn, Park, Girdvood, Evans, Hawkins, Gapper, Grundy, Woodroofe, Mason, Ford, Caselberg, Everett, Boddington, Wickerson, Moore, andEasthope. * Mr Hogg moved .and' Mr Bacon, seconded—That an exhibition be opened in the first week in October next.—Carried. Mr Rapp moved that Mr J. J, Freeth be asked to kindly consent to give a lecture. , Mr Freeth promised to do so and fixed upon Friday evening, September 19th as the date, the subject to be " The Maoris—Their superstition and language." ■'■ It was resolved that a weekly entertainment be arranged for, and also that Mr Gant be interviewed for the purpose of arranging for a dramatic entertainment, On the motion of Mr Lowes seconded by Mr Rapp, it was resolved to interview the St. Matthew's Vestry and endeavor to obtain the loan of their piano for the purpose of these entertainments, _ Mr Renall offered the use of a piano if it was found to be suitable, for which he received the thanks of the meeting Mr Rapp was appointed to arrange the programme of the Friday night entertainments, to take place in the Institute.
