; »' At the time we write, four portfolios are reported to be filled in; the.new Ministry, and, till the remaining seats in the Cabinet are distributed, it is impossible to say whether the adminis- i tration will be a strong or a weak one. We do not like Major. Atkinson as a Premier, and we believe tha,t,, the country "would like to see some other member of the House in his position, The Hon. George McLean, as Commissioner of Customs, is unobjectionable, but Mr Wakefield, as Native Minister, does not compensate for the loss of Mr Bryoe, It is, perhaps, a compliment to the latter gentleman that he/has so far resolved the native difficulty that a Middle Island member can be trusted to administer.this department. Mr Mitohelson may be accepted in his old position as Minister of Public Works, though, we fear, that his re-appointment means the pushing on of the North Island Trunk lino regardless of cost. We hope Mr ORMOND/or some other leading man who possesses the confidence 'of the country, will accept one of the- vacant portfolios. One or two really first-rate men must be added to the new Ministry before the colony is likely to be reconciled to granting it a lease of place and power. ;• •'} - Since writing the above we learn that the i additional Ministers are Cap-tain-Russell, Colonial Treasurers-Mr Huhsthouse, Commissioner of Posts and Telegraphs, and either Mr Fulton or Mr Fergus as Minister of Education.
