Notice is given by Messrs 0. Hi Osborne, Evan McKenzie, and Geo. Harvey of poison being laid on their properties at Dreyertown, The Masterton Fire Brigade met last night and resolved to invite the printers to play a friendly game of football on Saturday, September 6. It was arranged that a tea be provided on the election night, Wednesday September 3rd. The following resolution was passed:—" That the brigade views with disatisfaction the action of the Borough council in aocepting the resignation of its captain as Fire Inspector, whilst the, certificate of Fire Inspector Gapper was returned to him, The Brigade can only Tegard this aotion as a breach of faith on the part of the Council, and as an intentional slight to its captain, and through him to itself. Therefore this Brigade respectfully iuforms the Borough Council that'it will not work under Fire Inspector Gapper, take any orders from him, or permit him in any way, directly or indirectly, to interfere with its affairs."
When Parliament met yesterday, Major Atkinson, writes the N.Z. Times, was not in a position to make any definite announcement with regard to a new Ministry. All he he could say was that negotiations were prooeeding, and that he hoped to be able to submit the names to His Bxcellenoy today, The House adjourned till ?.30 that evening. Up to a late hour last night no further progress had been made in the negotiations, and we are in a position to state that no names had beon aefiniteiy fixed upon. A meeting (referred to by us yesterday) of those who voted against the Stout* Vogel combination, took place at 230 p.m. Fifty-one members attended. The advisability- of including.'Sir Julius Vogel in a new Ministry was discussed,' but there was strong opposition to such an arrangement, and we belieye there is now not the sligheßt ground for believing that it will be attempted. We understand that Mr Ormond is one of those whose assistance has been invited at the present juncture, and it is expected that an answer will be received from him in the oourse of the morning. There is every probability that the new Ministry will inolude several gentlemen who have not before held offioe.
