The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, AUGUST 19, 1884. THE POLITICAL SITUATION.

The political situation is a very uncomfortable one. It is just a toss up whether the new Stout-Yogel Ministry can live a month. The Yogel policv as declared prior to the elections was a right one, but it was essentially a Conservative policy. The members of the Conservative party, however, though they might welcome the policy would not hold out. the right hand of fellowship to the man who enunciated ( it. They have-apparently driven him into the Opposition ranks and his policy must be very much disguised and mutilated if it is to be tolerated in the company which he now keeps. When Sir Julius Yogel proffered a portfolio to Sir George Grey it was evident that he was ready to sacrifice his political creed to purchase support. I , We are sorry that Sir Julius Vogel 1 has not displayed more scruple, but it is possible that a lack of sympathy on the part of those who should have given him their support has driven him into a false position. Sir Julius Yogel if he possesses a majority in the House has but a very baro one. To make himself safe he will have to purchase three or four votes from the ranks op--1 posed to him. The probability is that he will buy what lie wants! It is not a nice thing to say that votes will be bought to turn the scale, but history usually repeats itself, and that which has been done in the past will again happen. Purchasing votes is however a gameat which two sidescan play. The Atkinson party will no doubt endeavor to tempt some of Sir Julius Vogel's followers, and till this little business of bidding for votes is settled we cannot hope to obtain a stable Government. We were among the first to welcome Sir Julius Yogel back into the political arena of the colony, but when he offered a portfolio to Sir George Grey we lost very much • of our faith in his capacity to serve the colony. We must be content to wait for some other leader unless Sir Julius Yogel sees the error of his ways and becomes true to the policy with which he has associated his name. We have no faith in Mr Stout as a leader. He rides too many hobbies to be the representative man of New Zealand. To make a land nationaliser Premier of a colony in which every other man is a freeholder, . is a blunder. It ia putting the round peg into the square hole with a vengeance. We took up Sir Julius ' Yogel for the sake of his policy, but we don't care two pins for Sir Julius Vogel without his policy. The Gov--1 ernor's speech to-day will, no doubt, reveal how much of the policy has \ escaped the radical mangle through 5 which it has been put, and will decide ■- whether there is enough of it left to ' make those who have the interests of \ the colony at heart satisfied to give r him further support.
