FOOTBALL.

The match between a team got together by Mr G. Ellers and a fifteen of the Masterton Olub was played in Mr G. Dixon's paddock on Saturday afternoon and resulted in an easy win for the Club by two goals and six trys to love, The scoring was done by J, Perry (4 tries), W. Perry (2), Hawke (1), and Bethune (1). Hawke ought to have been credited with another try, as he got over the line, but not knowing it, he passed to J. Perry, who got a touch down between the po'Sts. Bethune, W. Perry, and Ranganui, took tbe places, but the former was the only one to get the leather over the bar. For the Olub all the backs did good work. C. Perry

i made some fine kicks, : which would s have proved very useful Jo his side if 1 he had used a little more judgment and j dropped into touohj as it was, they only t had the effect of forcing the other side r down. W. Perry punted well. Among • the forwards Ranganui did some good | passing, while McLachlan, Felling, and O. Bannister played a hard game. The I Club team was not by any "means the , strongest, Harvey, J. Bannister, and 1 F. Perry being absent. For the losers > A. Welch (backhand Holmwood played tip well, more especially considering it > was their first game this season, and it j is a pity they did not turn out earlier j in the season, as they are deserving of , places in the team. Holmwood showed good knowledge of the game by the t manner in which he stopped some ; good rushes by the opposing forwards. > At quarter, Ngatuere and Kahu played I a good game, while Ellers did some i useful punting. Among the forwards, t the Days showed up well, and several of the Maoris were in good form. At the conclusion of the game, which was witnessed by a large number of spectators,'cheers were given by the teams. In another part of the ground a I number of butchers; bakers, blacksmiths, and wheelwrights were having a practice, arid it is anticipated that there will be a good game on Wednesj day next.
