PRESENTATION.
Yerterday Messrs Briggs, Scott, and Campin, on behelf of themselves and one hundred and eleven fellow workmen employed on the Opaki section of the railway extension, presented Mr George Oliver, the overseer ot works, with a handsome testimonial and an address expressive of their feelings i towards him personally, and conveying their sense of his upright and straightforward dealings upon all occasions, Accompanying the address was a heavy gold albert chain and locket, The locket was inscribed: " Presented to George Oliver, Esq., by the employees on the Opaki, section W.N. Ely., N.Z.," : and was made to order and design by ' the well-known firm of W. Littlejolin | and Son, of Queen-street, Masterton. | The contribution to the fund was limi- . ted to half-a-crown, and out of a possible one hundred and thirty there were one hundred and eleven names of the employees attached to the address. The following is a copy of the address, which was most artistically illuminated, and displayed skilful penmanship in its , axecution;— : To George Oliver, Esq. Dear Sir,—We, the undersigned employees upon the Opaki seotion Welling- ' ton-Napier Bailway, desire as an ' expression of our goodwill and esteem to present to you this small testimonial, together with a gold ohain and locket accompanying the same, as an acknowledgement of the manner in which you have conducted the above works, and of 1 the uniform impartiality shown by you to all under your charge, ' Signed by .us on behalf of ourselves and one hundred and eleven fellow workmen, whose signa» tures are attached, ¥, B. Campin, ; Robt, Scott, Jop Bkiqgs. The following is Mr Oliver's reply Masterton, 16th August, 1881 To Messrs W, B. Campin, Robert Siott, John Briggs, and the one hundred and eleven workmen signing the presentation : Gentlemen,—The honor ynu have conferred on me by the presentation of such a handsome and valuable present will always be looked back to by me with pleasure and gratification. But it gives me much greater pleasure to know that I possess the confidence and esteem of my fellow workmen, which I value muoh higher than gold. I have endeavored at all times to carry out my duties in an honest straightforward manner, both towards my employers and employees, and nothing could give me greater pleasure than to know that I had succeeded in doing so, I aho trust that the good feeling which now exists betwoen us may endure for ever, In conclusion I desire to return my sincere thanks to all for their expresH sion of esteem and goodwill towards me, I have, &c,, Geo. Oliver.
