A firm and ' active demand was experienced. 1 J THE QUEEN'S SPEECH. i London, August 14., 1 Parliament was formally prorogued ; to-day by commission, The Queen's I speech was read by the Lord ChancelB lor, which expresses regret that several . important measures which had been introduced had failed to become law. It , states that the friendliest intercourse 1 continues to be maintained with 1 the various Powers, and alludes.to 3 the resumption of diplomatic relations ! with the Mexican Republic. It laments a the failure of the conference on j Egyptian affairs, and adds that the Government will continue to fulfil with , fidelity the duties arising out of the f presence of British troops in the Nile: a valley, The special mission of Earl ■ Northbrook to Egypt will, it is believed, > materially aid her Majesty's counsels 1 on Egyptian questions and the | future steps to be . taken in that country, Regret is expressed , that the Zululand outside reserve 3 territory is now in a disturbed state. b Allusion is made to the improvement i which is manifest in Ireland and to the > prospects of abundant harvest throughj- out the Kingdom.
