THE CRISIS.

Nothing official, writes the Post, has yet transpired with rogard to the formation af the new Ministry, and unfortunately Mr Stout, who has consented b'o -join it, was compelled to leave Dunedin or urgent private business arising;qufc of the sudden illness of his partner. On Saturday Sir Julius Yogel had interviews with Mr Montgomery and Macandrew, and it was understoodthat they- were to give a reply as to -whether they would accept, seats or not, by noon today. This morning Mr Stout, Mr Macandrew and Mr Barron waited on Sir .George Grey to ascertain whether : there was any prospect of his adhesion, but speedily found that there was not.- On the contraiy, Sir George expressed himself with great bitterness regarding 1 the intrusion of Sir Julius Vogel, as he seemed to consider it, and as to the conduct of Mr Stout and others in supporting ; the member for Christchurch North;'. /The .result' ofi the' interview was very.unsatisfactory, As might be expected from all his past conduct, Sir George Grey has since placed himself in with Major Atkinson, •For years past he has kept that gentleman in office, and, we doubt 'not, is prepared to try and keep him there still rather than let anyone but himself succeed to power. Prior to Mr Stout's departure this afternoon, it was understood that. Messrs Ballance, Montgomery and Macandrew bad definitely accepted seats in the new Cabinet, the portfolios in which will probably be. allotted as follows: Premier' and' Attorney - General, Mr Stout; Treasurer, Sir Julius Vogel; Minister of Public Woiks, Mr Montgomery; Colonial Secretary, Mr Macandrew; Postmaster-General, Mr Ballance. Sir George Whitmore will probably represent the Government in the Legislative Council without portfolio. The vacant seat will shortly be filled by an Auckland member.
