OiiRisTCHURcn, August 9. ! The conference of the frozen meat companies held yesterday was not open to the Press, but a report was furnished to the newspapers this afternoon. It s'atea that the Gear Company, Wellington; Export Company, Wellington; New Zealand Refrigerating. Company; Southland Company; and Canterbury Company were represented. Mr Johitt Grigg was elected chairman. Tw principal resolutions were: That''/.no new contract be entered intp by any company represented at this conference at a higher rate of freight than ljd'per lb and 10 per cent, primage, one half of which primage to be received by fhe company contracting, this resolution' to to be binding until modified '^dr ; rescinded by mutual agreemenliamongall the companies represented: that 10 per cent, of the freight payable to the ship. be retained until the delivery of the whole cargo in good condition at- the port of discharge.; that the conditions' of all. future oharters be that: before commencing loading steamers the., chambers be cooled down for twelve, houra at. least, and that the highest temperature be 15 degrees; and that the.chambei's be fitted with ribs to keep ' the : meat off the sides, or that the carcases be stowed with the legs against the sides and bulkhaads to thesatisfaction of shippers; that the shipgive free access to representatives ok contracting shippers; that the storing be, done to his or their satisfaction ; that during the voyage the temperature shall not exceed 20 degrees in the largest part of the hold, such temperature to be ascertained by self-register-ing thermometers placed in each chamber fitted, in cases of which the keys shall be handed to the.contracting shippers; that,; on the vessel aniving at a port of discharge, the consignees and underwriters, or representatives, be ac>

corded free access to the ship's refrigerating chambersand the refrigerating engineer's log; that every opportunity be offered for inspection of the ' meat previous to and during discharge, tile* engineer's log to be at all times open for inspection by contracting shippers, consignees, or underwriters; that the time for discharging in London be 48 hours for cargoes to 8000 carcasses, 24 hours additional allowed ■ / ' for every 4000, or part of 4000 carIk. cases j that the refrigerating engineers shall hold certificates entitling them to the rank of chief engineer of a steamer such refrigerating engineers to be under the control of the captain in the same manner as the other engineers of the vessel ; that each company bo requested to confirm the resolutions adopted by the conference.: that where freezing companies are not represented they be invited to confirm the resolutions.
