Malting barley is neglected at 3s 9d to 4s 3d. New Zealand oats, feeding sorts, 2s 8d to 3s, prices are depressed; milling ditto, 3s Id to 3s 2d; the market is weaker. New Zealand oats, under bond, are steady at 2s 2d to 2s 3d, Tlie timber market is unchanged. London, August 4. Received August 5, 4,5 p.m,—The Australian cricketers began ' the twenty-third match of their tout today at Canterbury, where they met for the first time, an Eleven of the County of Kent, composed as follows Lord Harris, Messrs Christophersen, Lipscombe, McKinnon, A. Penn, E. Wilson, Kemp, and G, G. Hearne, F..Hearne, Wotton, and A. Hearne. The weather was splendid, and there was a large attendance of spectators. The wioket was in good order. The Home team went in first, and this innings closed for 169, Mr Wilson being the highest scorer with 37 (bowled). The Australians went to the wickets, and at the close of the day had run up 136, with ouly four wickets down. Murdoch made 24 (caught); McDonnell is not out, with 80 to his credit. A prisoner confined in Pentridge Stockade, made an unsuccessful attempt to escape to-day, and lost his life, He was observed by the warders, who fired upon him and killed him, Hong Kong, August 4.

London, August 5, ' Received August 6,1 p.m.—ln the House of Commons.this afternoon, Mr Gladstone made bis promised statements as to the intention of the Government with regard to -Egypt. He announced that Earl Northbrook, the first Lord of Admiralty, will proceed, to that country this month with the title of High Commissioner to report upon the state of affairs and advise the Government as to the best course to pursue. His Lordship will be accompanied by Sir Evelyn-Baring, formerly British Consul-General in Egypt. Sydney, Wednesday. Arrived, yesterday afternoon— Wakatipu from Wellington. The Legislative Assembly lias been sitting the whole of the night discussing the Land Bill on the motion for the third reading, and still (10 a.m.) continues. 5
