SIR JULIUS VOGEL AND NEW ZEALAND DEFENCE.
The following telegram is published for the information of Volunteers and others interested in the defence of New Zealand. It is in reply to the questions submitted to candidates for the House of Representatives;—" Urgent,—Wellington, 7 p.m., 17-7-84,—Messrs 'New Zealand Military Gazette,' Chi'istchurch. I cannot answer all questions definitely, as they have not been sufficiently under consideration. Will, however, reply to the best of my ability. (1.) I favor the appointment of an Imperial officer on the active list to the post of Commander of the Volunteer Force, as I think it wil make the service more attractive to those who really desire tho attainment of professional excellency. (2.) Second question requires further consideration, Reply to (3) and (4.) Favorable to merging the Armed Constabulary Force with as little delay as possible. (5.) I think the Police Force should not be treated as a quasi-military force. (6.) As far as to place the Volunteer Foico in an efficient condition. (7.) I am decidedly favorable to the harbors of the Colony being placed in an efficiently defensive condition without delay. -Julius Vogel."
