SPORTING INTELLIGENCE EXTRAORDINARY.
Wairarapa North Advertising: Stakes, Full length of the Couase. To start on Tuesday, 22nd, at 9 sharp. ■ Entries: ■ Hogg's "Mullock," by "Teapot," out of "Gas," 3 years. Payton's "Pure Merino," by "Long purse," out of " Landgrab," aged, NOTES BY "TWIGEM."
It was thought at one time that the old horse .would be the only one entered for this event,' and' that there; would be a walk over, but, in order to make a race of it, the owner of "Mullock " agreed- to enter him ori the condition that the stakes were divided, " Puke -Merino's" performances are too well known to be recapitulated; and although rather slow, he.is a splendid "stayer," and is always "in" at the finish, and generally manages to secure a place. " Mullock" came out with a good name,, on account of his but he has done nothing to justify the high opinion -formed of him. When entered for the Municipal Stakes he started a hot favorite, and though he went away at a great rate, and took a strong lead, he soon caved in when the work began to tell on him, and .finally dropped out of the running altogether. He secured one or two small things before retiring, notably the " Metalled road up to your own door" Handicap, and the "Cemetery Reserve Planting" Stakes. So, though not a great winner, he has paid his training expenses,' A~ great many fanoy that as he ages he will be more reliable, and run steadier, but that at present it is folly to enter him in such "hot"company as the old horse, but in the present event his owner started to win, however it may goBetting: 3to lon "Merino,"but very few takers.
