The following telegrams were published by our contemporary on Saturday last:— Masterton, July 19. 'To 0. Rogers, Taueru. Mr circulates a report that you say I was treely shouting at Taueru. Is it true or nolt W. W McOardle. Taueru, July 19. W. W. McOardle, Masterton. Utterly false, 0, Rogers.
We are authorised by Mr C. Rogers to state that they were published without his authority and that if he had made any public statement on the subject be would have preferred to have given the whole facts of the case. He considers that an unwarrantable use has been made of his mane for electioneering purposes, He places at our disposal the following additional messages to which our local contemporary does not allude : Mr Bish, Masterton, Received telegram from Mr McOardle stating that you are circulating reports that I stated he was shouting for electors, surely this is not true. Reply. 0. Rogers.
Mr 0, Rogers, Taueru. I saw Mr McOardle drinking in your room. Mr—■ said Mr McOardle shouted for him, Your name not mentioned. A. Bish. The telogram published by our contemporary was not quite accurate, It should have been— Mr 0. Rogers, Taueru. Mr A. Bish circulating report that you say . I was freely shouting for electors at Taueru. Is this true or not, W. W. McOardle, . The sum and substance of the above is that Mr McOardle has not shouted freely for electors, but it has been incontestably proved that he has violated the pledge he took when lie joined the Good Templar Lodge in Masterton, a Lodge over which he once presided as "Worth? Chief."
Our local contemporary published on Saturday last a complimentary notice which we gave Mr E. Meredith when that gentleman ceased to be Chairman of the Masterton fioad Board. Mr Meredith deserved a complimentary notice, and we had some sympathy with him at the time because we were unaware of the cause which led to his enforced retirement. When subsequently we heard that a member of his family had been playing r game of« grab" with tho Board and that the Chairman had permitted the little game to be played, our feeling of sympathy vanished.
