CARTERTON.-TUESDAY, There ffere only three civil cases heard at Carterton, one being G, A Fairbrother v J, Ridgway,—Commission on sale of property, L 9, Mr Beard for plaintiff, Mr Bunny for defendant, and which resulted in a judgment for paintiff. Another was J, Burrowß v G. Bowstead.—Claim LlB Is, Mr Beard for plaintiff Mr Bunny for defendant, From the evidence it would seem that defendant was in the employ of plaintiff, and plaintiff lent him a horse to race at tho Island Bay races, and told him that as payment for the use of the horße defendant was to take two tickets in the totalisator, Defendant won with the horße, and pocketed L1616s dividend, which he failed to hand over to .plaintiff. This amount and 25s for a hive of honey made the claim as brought, Defendant's oase was that Plaintiff asked him to take the horse and " run it dark," so as to cheat the Island Bay Race Committee, He did so aud won, but the fraud was disi covered. The horse was a trained one entered to run in a hack race under a false namo, and the Stewards declined to pay over the stakes. The Court, however, appearing to disbelieve the defendants story, gave judgment for the plaintiff for amount and coats. There wore several cases settled out of Court.
