MASTERTON-THIS DAY. (Before H.S.Wakdeu Esq. R.M.) J. 0. Ingram v G. M. Beer.—Allowing chimney to catch fire fined 10s anil costs. Frederick Stock for stealing a scarf pin ulue 4s 6d was discharged with a caution, William Sinlih, alius Barry was charged with stealing a watch from Joseph M, Bugess of Brancepeth, Accused pleaded not Euilty. He was in Masterton on June 13. He was in tho bar at tho Club Hotel when accussed came in and asked him would be sell his watch. He said he did not require to sell it. He lay down on the sofa in tho afternoon and on waking he missed his watch, He at onco gave information to tho police. He had since seen the watch in the hands of the police, He produced his receipt for tho purchase of the watoh,

Accused asked prosecutor if he accused him of stealing his watch.

Prosecutor said he did not, and he could not say at what time he lost his watoh,

_ Thomas Moron, sworn, said he was a livery stable keeper at Tinui. Knew accused. Saw him offering the watch for sale for Bis guineas on Wednesday last, 9th instant. He offered it to witness and several others,' The watoh produced was identified by witness as the Bame, Adjourned for the appearance till three o'clock: thiß afternoon.

Tho question was whether goods delivered in August had or had not been paid for, also an amount of 15s as to whether or not they were delivered. W. Rapp sworn said none of this amount had been paid to him, Williams acknowledged that the items were correct as read over to him. Ho admitted an item £9 17s 3d. The account had not been settled,

Williams wanted to return a dress piece but he would not take it back, It was not left on the counter to his knowledge, W, Parker sworn, said ho was a contractor residing in Masterton. Was present when accounts were made up between McDermott, Williams, and others, and Rapp & Hare. By Mr Wardell—He did not say he had paid any of it. J. W. Tattersall, sworn, said-He was present in November last, and made out an account of Williams ; also saw statement prepared by Rapp & Hare. Williams objected to the item being charged to the partnership account, but did not dispute the correctness of tho item as produced, He had on another occasion admittea the correctness of tho account, If. any amount had been paid on that account, he should haye given credit for it. He was not in the room during the whole of the interview,
