Able and thoughtful sermons were delivered at the Wesleyan church yesterday by the Key. JUr Oliver, chairman of the district. Mr G, Beetliam meets the electors at Taueru to day, and Mr W, 0, Buchanan speaks at Kaiwaiwai. Numerous letters are crowded out of our present issue from country correspondents. Their length in some instances is fatal to their publication, Professor Hugo gave another very interesting lecture to a rather small house on Saturday night. The subjects—- " Language and Physique"—were listened to attentively by those present, A typographical error occurred in the letter published by Mr E. Meredith in our issue of the 12th inst. " When that ' mode' of justice was denied to Mr Sutton" should have read " When that ' meed' of justice." We have received a political effusion in, verse signed " Dolly," Our sympathies are entirely with the literary efforts of the fair sex, but for years past wa have drawn the line at poetry. The annual meeting of parishioners of St, Matthews Church takes place this evening at 7,30 p.m.
The fall in the bank rates has come at last. The Bank of New South Wales advertises the following scale;—three months bills 6 per cent., and four months bills 7 per cent.
The meeting of Mr George Beetham's committee at Masterton was very well attended on Saturday last, and encouraging reports were received from all parts ol the district,
We are informed that a number of electors for the Southern district who represent foreign nationalities, and who ace now residing in Wairaraua North have held an open air meeting and after full discussion decided to give their votes to Mr W. G. Buchanan,
"We hear that Mr Tanner is likely to beat Smith (the man of the people) for Waipawa. Mr Smith and Mr MoOardle, according to our Woodville contemporary, were to be twin representatives for that thriving township, In our last issue we erroneously stated that the nomination for the Southern District was to-day. The nomination takes place at Featherston on Wednesday next. We regret the mistake, but as iij this district the fact of the exact dates for nomination is net, as in others, kept before the public by advertisments, misapprehension ia likely to arise. The Oddfellows Ball comes off in the Theatre Royal this evening and promises to be a great succesß. The services of the Masterton String Band have been engaged and Mr E, B. Bell has been retained as caterer.
A scene occurred at the Salvation Army service yesterday afternoon. A local billiard-marker, who has been " a thorn in the flesh" to the local porps, for some time has bad a sentence of excommunication passed on him for a period of one month, but in spite of this manifesto he endeavored on this occasion to force admission to the premises, The consequence was that thepolice were called in to remove him. It ia- time that Buch unseemly occurrences were put a stop to. Mr MeCardle addressed a largo meeting of electors at the Taueru Schoolhouse on Thursday evening last, Mr MoGrath being in the ohair. In introducing the candidate the Chairman expressed a hope he would receive a fair and impartial hearing, and to the credit of the meeting it must be admitted that not a single event occurred to mar the harmony of the proceedings. The courtesy Bhewn to Mr MeCardle by the Taueru Bottlers, moat if not all of ivhom are supporters of Mr Beetham, was in striking contrast to the disorderly and disgraceful proceedings at Mr Beetham's meetings in Masterton, The country rusljeos have Bet the towns* men an example they certainly ought to follow, Mr MeCardle received a vote of thanks for his address, and one for the Chairman closed the meeting, The bridge over the Upper Taueru was opened on Saturday last. The heavy raiu of the morning prevented a large atiendance of settlors, but the sun broke through the mist and cloud and lightened up the bridge, and river at the critical moment. After the ceremony was over, the visitors, including the Chairman of the County Council, Mr King the engineer, and Mr Reese, the contractor, and the workmen engaged on tbo works, had luncheon at Bowlands. The bridge was opened by Miss Mabel Hawkins, and christened by her the" Tikorangi bridge," Tikorangi being the Maori name of the district at which the bridge js built. The bridge is a truss bridge with a span of 110 feet, and is at a height of 29 fe6t above the river bed. By the erection of this bridge the greatest difficulty in securing certainty of communication between Tiraumea and Masterton is overcome. As ipon as the small bridges in Parker's contract are completed, there will be three miles of good bridged dray road completed. Beyond what we must now call the" Tikorangi bridge," the road has, we believe, been surveyed through past Manawa and Mr Wingate'g to the Tonub Eketahuna Main Road, and if means can be found to open that line it will effect a saving of from 15 to 20 miles in the road coomunjeation between that district and Masterton, A large part of the famous Puketoi country will also we believe benefit greatly by the opening of this route.

Dargbn on her first appearance to-morrow even* ing, as we are informed that the chairs ara being taken up rapidly, and we should; advise all who desire comfortable seats to obtain them at Mr Price's without delay. Several photographs of the lady are to be seen in the windows of various business establishments in Queen-street. Mr Buchanan meets the electors at Parkvalo on Wednesday, Waingawa on Thursday and Olareville on Friday next at 7,30 p.m. The Bev W. E, Paige enjoyed an agreeable -surprise to«day. He was presented by a number of his friends with a handsomo buggy, with a horse, harness, and other equipments. The promoters of the testimonial were, we understand, some ladies oonnected with the church, and the perfect manner in whioh they carried it out deserves speoial commendation,
Quite a number of inhabitants of Carterton assembled in the High Btreet, on Sunday afternoon with the. idea of hearing Professor Hugo lecture on Spiritualism. They wore, however, doomed to disappointment for on the arrival of the Professor some half hour after the advertised time it was discovered that he had not previously engaged the Hall, and as another gentleman was in possession of it the whole thin? fell to the ground,
