MR SUTTON'S SPECIAL ADVOCATE.

TO THE EDITOB, Sir,—l only returned home by lato train last eyening from Wellington, and this morning my attention was drawn to a somewhat ambiguous passage in your leader of 7th inat., which runs thus: "Wo arc told that Mi' Meredith is tlio special advocate of Mr Sutton's cause." No indication being given as to what Mr Sutton's oause is, or with whom I am supposed to advocate it, I may be allowed to romark in rejoinder that believing Mr Sutton to be a good and faithful publio officer harshly used, I was one of those settlers that signed his petition for an enquiry into his conduct, and when that mode of justice was denied him, I was one of those who presumed to stand by a fallen man by signing my name to what I still believe to bo a well-earned testimonial to his integrity and efficiency. I am informed upon good authority that I am oredited with having instigated Mr Sutton to the course he has taken at the recent election meetings. To thiß I give the most unqualified denial. I have taken no part in the present elections, or in any matter of general or public interest that has not been fairly and squarely before tho public. I hold my opinions upon conscientious convictions, and would be a craven if I feared to express them. I have neither personal or ambitious endfl of any kind to serve, but I will have fair play, if I can get it, whether for myself, or my fellow man, be he whom he may. I am. &c., Edwin Meredith, Masterton, Thursday, July 10th, 1881
