LARGE FIKE AND LOSS OF LIFE,
Hawkra, Saturday. A large fire occurred at Cook's hotel last night. The place was campletely gulted. The firo broke out at the hjreplaco of one of the sitting rooms, and quickly spread, having a firm hold before the brigade sot to work, They managed, however, to prevent whole building from being destroyed, and the fire from spreading ta adjoiuing block, some of the furniture ana 1 stock was saved, but the place is quite a wrec|f. Insurance £IOOO in Northern; stock £7OO, New Zealand; building £SOO, in the Na'ional A man named TJios. Kilroy, who was sleeping in one of the rooms, was suffocated, and his body found afterwards slightly charred. He appeared to bo dazed by the smoke as he was found on his hands and knees on the floor. He could easily have escaped otherwise.
