Butler, shiro engineer to the Dunolly and Bet shire councils, on Wednesday afternoon, Mr Butler found tee note in tht stuff ing between the lining of an old arm chair, which is in use in the shire hall, To this note hangs a tale. Ou the 25th July, 1876, nomination papers were recieved by the shiro secretary, MiGeorge Cooke, since dead for the position ot auditor to the shire, a £lO h-posit accomponying each nomination paper, Amongst these was one from Mr J. H. Yates. Although the secretary knew he had recieved the the dote from Mr Yates it mysteriously disappeared, tnc he was at a loss to account for its strange disappearance to the council, and was placed tn rather an awkward predicament. The council ultimately made good the £lO note to Mr Yates; but they weie anything but satisfied with the secretary's explanation regarding the loss, The appearance of the note has removed the unjust suspicion entertained.
