"SNIP" AND HIS NAME.

To the Editor, Pre,—Had it not baen for that passage in Mr Hawkins' letter whsre he takes " Snip" to task because he does not sign nis name, I should not have noticed it. One word of advice to you, Mr Hawkins: When you find a man writes to the Press and does not sign his name to his name to his letter, don't be in a hurry to infer that he is either ashamed ar afraid to do so. If a man writes facts it can make no difference whether he signs his name or not, it would not alter nor affect them in any way. The facts predicated by Magellan, Gallelio, &c., would have remained the samo had we nuvor known their names; but I find this, to, be a weakness with a few who are m such a position that the free expression»pf their opinions oan make little or no difference to them. But it must- be. remembered that there are others so situated that they cannot express their opinions freely upon any subject without being the worse for having done so (in some respect), and I will add, that overy man in the circumstances I have indicated is a testimony to the meanness of the community among which he has to get his living. And it may possibly be found, if pushed a littlo further, that the question Population v. Ferrets is in some way connected with this state of aflairs. I know there are those who do not desire population beyond a few hewers of wood and drawers of water, and a few more to breed and turn out feirets j and I also know that some of the greatest sticklers for ferrats will by and by be forced to admit that the room of tho forret is pleasanter than its company, • I am, eto,, Fobnax.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l must again aßk your indulgence for just a few words in reply to Mr Dixon's letter of last Saturday. I wish tn inform him that I am an insurer, but that I am not aware of an office that insures against fire in the world to come. Perhaps Mr Dixon has insured Jin such an office, if so I shall be glad if he will give me the name and address he will thus confer a great benefit and comfort on many others in addition. Yours, etc, Batkpayeb,
