Received June 27, 2.3b p.m.—lntelligence is to hand of a fresh out. break of hostilities between French and Chinese troops in Tonqin. Accounts to hand state; that a detachment of French regulars, numbering TOO, were proceeding to occupy Langson, (an important town on the Tonquin Chinese frontier) when they -were attacked by a large force of Chinese; who had been holding Langsoiv in violation of.the Treaty concluded last month between France and China. A severe engagement endued/resulting in the repulse of the Chinese, who are said to have numbered 4000, with. heavy loss in killed and Voiinded. The casualties on the French side are given' as 49 killed. ;
In'consequence of the: outbreak of hostilities, 51 Patenotre, French Com-missioner-in Tonquin, has been:ordered to Pekintoj demand reparation from the Chinese! Government for attack and violation of the Tientsin Treaty, The French; Fleet, under Admiral Courbet, has further been ordered to proceed northwards to support Patenofct'es' demand!
