A NEW FIREBELL FOR MASTERTON.

(lO THE E3110R.)

Sir,—in your paper, of yesterday I notice that the subject of .the new.fireb'ell lß.agaih brought before the-public under the heading ofthoMasteiton'Fire Brigade. 1 -This quesv tion has been before distiussertby.thepapeiy and also by the Council, It is» question against which the Council.should take adetermined stand. The;;statemerits made at the Brigade meeting on Wednesday evening-, last by Borne of its members are, I consider/ out of place and not in'iali respects correct,I think, sir, that it is very- inc'orisistahton the part of the Brigade io endeavor to force the Council to spend L3O for that whioh'is not wanted, viz ; a n3w firebell, while there are so many residents in the borough heavily rated, and to whoso iresidonces'the roads and footpaths aro not properly made. The statements made by tlie Secretary'are hot' worth only what, they could fetch when brought under the examination of considerate mon, But there is the statement reported to have been made by Fireman W. Dixon, that 'lf the-Brigadedissolved,• every, householder iu the town would find their insurances raised.' I would ask; Fireman: Dixon what authority lie lias for making this, assertion? Had this been said by a member of an insurance company; :■ beingpresent it might.hav<i been"accepted as probable, but at anywte not certain even then. As an insurer I condemn such statements, they should not be-made by any unauthorised person. I contend that the present firetell is sufficient to 'meet all tlie requirements of the borough, 1 and I earnestly hopethe ratepayers generally will see the necessity of; getting better.roads.and other improvements; at the same iime hoping that loss, fires may,be experienced, and yet the old bell maintain, its present position for years to come, The day Lai not yet arrived when.». constituted body—such as the Borough Council-should be overawed by bounce, or treated' with 1 disrespect, They have the appropriation of' the publio [money,' and it is; their doty to take care th&t ihtrastcd to'their management is in np,way;misapplied,. There is 'another 'very important matter in conueotiori with' the' :)Brigad6 movement' which I intend shortly to ask to be informed on, if it.isnot taken up before, consequently I will content : rnyself, and in tho meantime' await results, ':.'■"
