MASTERTON FIRE BRIGADE.

CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from the Town Clerk asking Captain Muir to attend the next meeting of the Couno'l on Tuesday next and explain the giicvaai-os of tin 3ri?ade. Mr Easthope said a Councillor spoke at the last meet it-g of the IWmigh Council of someone trying to stir up will) a dirty stick, but the bell was urgently neodcd, and it was not from him that the first proposal came, but from instructions received ho wrote to the Council, and they, or some of them, appeared to throw cold water on it. Foreman Thos. Dixon said that tile remarks made by some of tho Council were uncalled lor, and most ungcntleininly, but tlio question was brought before tho Brigade and carried, and there is no blame to bo attached to the Secretary, as all he had done was by order of tho Brigule. lliis statement was endorsed by a fireman who thought tho Borough ought to supply a new bell.

Lieut Keester said tho Brigade had been Started fi years, and the borough had not given them anything oxcopt clothes, and the men had givi Ji their services free, and they intend to stick to it if tin borough will help them. If the borough had to provido a brigade they would no doubt fiud it moro dxi eaaivo.

Captain Muir said tlicy must not let tho Borough tliiuk it a threat to disband if they would not give any money. If they won't fiivo any monoy let them say so, and tho Brigade would uso its own discretion. Tho bell is much needed, as somo of tho members do not hear it when rung, especially when tho wiud is in the contrary direction. • Firearm W. Dixon said where he lived ho had not heard the bell when tho wind was the wrong way, and tho Borough should help them to procure a now bell, If the Brigade disbanded every householder in tho town would liud their insurance money raised.

The Secretary said, ho thought the captain should attend tho meeting of tho Council as asked, for the Brigade ought to work with tin Council, instead of against it, One of tho great grievances is "want of money." Some of tho members of tho Fiuanco Committee would be surprised to hear they are really committeemen, as they attend very rarely indeed, The Insurauco Co.'s gaye engines and appliances, but tho Council have given nothing. ,Cr Gapper. is grieved at not being assume command when at a fire, and ho thought tho Council might procure another man (a member of the brigade) as Junior Fire Inspector, or in place of Cr Gapper. Captain Muir said ho tlimght a Fire. Inspector should be a man in the, Brigade, and not a man out of it. '' : '

It was resolved—That Captain Muir, in sompany with tho Secretary, should attend ;he next meeting of the Council and explain ihe grievances, which was carried unaninously.
