THE ZEALANDIA CARPET WORKS.

(From the Ohmtchuroh Press.)

Some little lime-back, durino the Mayoralty of Mr J."G. Bnddenklau, b very interesting industry was launched in a raodeat and unpretending manner. The industry referred to was bearing the name at the head. At that time (he production of carpota; was but small, the facility for carrying out the work being limited in the extreme, As the induatry progressed, and the carpets of New Zealand manufacture niade'their way into tho markot, in opposition to tho imported article, Mr Mitchell, the proprietor of the works, found that it was necessary to obtain larger premises. With (his view a removal was made to the open Bpace on the town side of the. Heathcoto Arms, Here Mr Mitchell has made the start of what we look forward to as being the nucleus of a considerable factory, in which the work of producing carpets will be carried on. The loom room is of brick, 66ft x 29ft, and is well lighted and ventilated, In this room there are eight looms, in full work, producing carpets of various patterns, which have been highiy appreciated, not only in New Zealand but in Australia, with' which a very large trade has been done in carpets, - The patterns comprise among others many illustrative of our Naiive ferns, which are produced in the ordinary color of brown and green, and they are both well defined and; carried out. At the rear of the loom room is the dye house, This is a brick edidce, 30115, and is fitted for four vats: At present only one vat is in position, but it will not be long before the other three vats are ready for work. Close by the dye house, and

connected therewith by means of an ejector, is a water tank supplied by an artesian well, the pipo king two inches indiarnetor. This, it may bo noted, is down lift, and there is & grand flow. As a whole, the New Zealandia Carpet Works allows what can be achieved by industry and enterprise, Ms Mitchell, under the great disadvantages which always _ impede the progress of new industries, has made a great success,' and as a pioneer in the particular lino of industry which he orrries on is ontitlod to. a great deal of credit.
