The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, JUNE 21, 1884. WAIRARAPA REPRESENTATION.
Ai,l ovei' llie colony there is a ripple of excitement over tlio approaching general election, but in this district we are,.as yet, very tranquil. In Messrs Beethaji and Buchanan wo have excellent representatives, and it is very natural that political uspirants should think twice before they come forward to do battle with thorn. In tho northern electoral district tho possible candidates that liavo been named are Messrs Hawkins, Meredith, and Lowes, but apparently there is no certainty 'about either of the three coming forward. Wc do not believe tlmb Mr Hawkins seeks a scat in the Assembly, ami we aro of opinion that Mr Lowes is not likely to stand. His chanco of success is not sufficiently assured for him to take advantage of the present opportunity, and ho will probably wait till a more favorable ono offers, Three years ago Mr Meredith expressed some willingness to come forward, but judging from recent events, we scarcely think that he has made up his mind to stand. In the southern electorate Messrs Bonny, Mathews, Boys, and Phillips lmve been spoken of as possible opponents to Mr Buchanan, It is a question whether Mr Bunny, after his recent reverse at To Aro {will feel himself strong enough to take the field, and It is very doubtful whether either of tho other tlireo will hazard a campaign against Mr Buchanan, At present it would almost appear as if Messrs Beethaji and Buchanan were likely to have a walk over. Wo have a great deal of confidence in both of them, though latterly we have, unlike them, withdrawn our support to Major Atkinson, and wo also entertain a stronger admiration for Sir Julius than they aro likely to profess. •; Still, wo should not be sorry to seo a contested election 1 In 1881, tho election fight was obviously beneficial to both members, and it stirred up the district to take an interest in public questions. If Messrs Buetiiam and Buchanan enjoy a walk over, tho result will be tho retention of two trustworthy servants, but wo sli'ill, in a great measure, lose llio opportunity afforded by the dissolution for discussing the affairs of
tho colony, and tlio representatives of •tlio district will be more indifferent to the interests of tlio Wniravapa if thoy get into, tlio Houso without toil or : trouble, than if thoy have to fight for theh\seak " : . ■ N
