MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs Boddington (Chairman), Galloway, Lowes, Bish, and Payton.:, ■ ■■■■!■ The minutes of the previousmeeting were read and confirm ed. The Treisurer reported a credit balance at date of £2B 18s 9d.

Correspondence was read from Education Board approving, of the recommendation of the" committee re division of the High School fees. From W. J, Steward re election of School Committees.

The following report was then read Head Afisrea'a monthly report. . Sir.—There are 510 children upon the roll, 293 boys and 225 girls, During the past month the average attendance has been 386, the higheßt.atlendanoe at any one time registering 431 and the lowest 2G5, Several wet days, on which the average was only j .ist over one half the number on the books, will acoount for the low weraje, R, Lee Esq., the Inspeotor of sohools, visited the school without notice on the 6th inst and entered the following report in tho Official Log Book.

" I havo spent a good part of to-day in seeing (viva voce) the work of the Kigh School iu Algebra, Euclid, Latin, and French. Considering the time during which these classes havo been under instruction, the work done is oreditable to both teachers and scholars. In AiigUßt I intend giring short papers to eaoh class, and with the nnpresions how formed, I shall be able to speak more particularly of the work. The school generally is in very good working order, and the teachers competent and, earnest in the discharge of duty. The work in drawing, singing, and sewing is going on eat'sfactorily. I had also the pleasure of seeing the well trained ,Cadet Corps of'the school put through their drill by Mr Grundy. I am pleased to learn thifc a school library is in course of formation. This school did exceedingly good work at the last Exam,, and, from my inspection to-day, the eacellant management is well in accord with the good results." K. Lee Inspeotor. The Chairman -said they must oilfeel great pleasure at so gratifying a report from Mr Lee, >

The visiting member reported that the approach to the girls school was flooded, and that the necessary steps had been taken to remove the flood water.

It was resolved that,,an application bo made to the Borough Council for repairs to the footpath near the school. .The. following accounts—C, E, Daniels, £3 2s; G. M, Wood, £1 lis 6d; Mrs Shepherd, £2 10s; J, Payton & Co, Bs—were passed for payment, The Treasurer reported the receipt of £2l for High School fees up to date.

The Secretary reported that notices had been served on the parents of children who had neglected to sent their children to school,

The Chairman reported 1 that the gymnastic appliances ordered had been erected. Also that he had with Mr Lowes waited on the Town Land" Trustee to ask for a grant in aid, and they had no doubt seen in the press the result of the application. Mr Galloway expressed his regret at the remarks made at the Town Lands Trustee meeting to the effect that £45 out of the £SO would be expended for the benefit of a few children in the higher classes, At' present at least fifty children made use of; the scientific apparati, and the number would, by the time the new apparati were obtained, be almost doubled.

The Chairman said the Committee were elected by the householders and on a former occasion disbursed a similar grant in a satisfactory minner. , The library which they proposed' to establish would be open to all the' children', excepting infants, and he . expressed some disappointment at the result of the late interview with the' Town Lands Trustees. '

Mr Lowes said lie was under the impresssion that the grant would yet be given. Mr Bish said ho_ should support the grant, and he did nob consider Borne of the arguments brought against it were at ail tenable, The Chairman Baid the interests of the school had been ably represented by Mr McCardle in the appeal whicli he made to his follow trustees, and in his reply totho objections which they raised.

Messrs Boddington and Lowes, the sub-committee, were requested to wait •on the Trustees again at their next meeting, full authority being given, to them to act on behalf of the committee.

The meeting then adjourned, Mr Galloway being appointed visiting, member for the ensuing month.
