MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The pal fortnightly meeting was held last evening. Present-His Worship Mayor, and Ors Price; Gaselberg, Heron, Hessey, Johnson,OJia ; mberlain, Perry, and Williams. The minutes of tha-previous meeting were read and confirmed. '_•■ ; '' RENALL'sj swamp. A ; letter was read from Dr Beard, stating that .there 'was nothing to fear from the swamp. The Mayor thought that summer the swamp, would be unwhole. some. Or Caseiberg-rnoved, Or Williams seconded, that the swamp be left in abeyance until the summer. POUNDKEEPEiI's REPORT. _' The report stated that fees amounting to £i 4s were received during the past fortnight.
CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from Mr T. McLennan, complaining of the cutting up of his paddock when obtaining gravel. The matter was referred.to the Works Committee. " From Mr R ; .Hare, who is erecting a house adjoining'a shop, 4Gffc from the road, asking to be allowed to make the roof only of iron and not the sides. TheilayoY; I 'think there would be no objection, seeing it is only an addition to an old shop. Or Oaselberg said that before the application was granted to Mr Hare, he Bhould like to have the opinion of the Fire Inspector (Or Gapper). Or Gopper: There are no other houses within some distance, with the exception of Mr Hare's own property, and, of course, in case of fire Mr Hare would be the loser. Or Oaselberg moved that the application be granted. Or Price seconded it. Or Heron thought there would be more applications ii; this was granted. Resolved, that Mr Hare be informed that he need only cover the roof with corrugated iron. • NEW EIRE-BELL.
Tie Secretary of the Fire Brigade to the Council, asking for the sum of £3O to assist in buying a new fireball, at the same time stating there were|'X7 collected already. The bell wo»lc\ weigh from 3 to 3| cwt. Or Heron said that £5 had been offered before, and he thought this might be increased to £lO. Cr Caselberg said lie had road a report in the papers of the brigade disbanding. He .thought the brigade had rendered valuable assistance to the town, and that it would bo a great pity to disband, as the insurance rates would no doubt be raised in consequence Or Chamberlain asked that the letter stand ;over until further information be obtained, He thought the Council should encourage them and give the money: as the town could not well do without them. Cr Price said that Captain Muir might be asked to attend the next meeting of the Council and have an understanding as to the dissatisfaction which existed. _ Or Gapper explained that the Council had had no information as regarded disbandnient, except from the papers, and he thought if there really was a complaint it should come from the captain. Mr Eastbope wanted the small bell up towards his house, but he (Cr Gapper) did not think there was any necessity for a new bell. Cr Perry said he agreed with Cr Gapper.
Or Heron said ho' could generally hear the bell at Kuripuni, and thought there was no cause for .a new bell, but if there were any'' appliances wanted he should willingly vote for a sum towards them,
Cr Caselberg: If there is a grievance it should be looked into, but we ought to maintain our position, and I think the application '> should be adjourned until we know what ut the matter. Or Gapper: It is for a new bell, and I think it is not wanted.
Cr Chamberlain: We want a bell to be heard all over the borough. The Mayor; Ido not think the bell
is wanted, but. I am always willing to give towards appliances. If anyone is stirring up discontent it is a great pity. • ■ '
Moved by Cr Chamberlain, and seconded by Cr Price-That Mr Muir
(the captain) be requested to attend the next meeting of the Council.
WORKS COMMITTEE.
Tho Overseer's report was read on works in progress, recommending an advance payment of ,£25 to Doucherty and Co.; also'.that £2 10s he expended in reducing the banks in Church-street to give access to Bannis-ter-street through Eeaton-street. The recommendations were adopted by the committee atid the Council. FINANCE COMMITTEE.
The following' accounts were passed for payment :-Toomath,i3 15s 7d; Smith k Hogg, 13 2s • Payton is Co., £3 13s fid; Keturning Officer, £1 Is • E. Feist, 122s 3d; F. Redman, 12s 6d; J. Hoffiens, £2 15s 6d.
STREET LAMPS COMMITTEE. The Lamp Committee reported having visited different parts of the town for the purpose'of selecting sites for the erection of lamps, and resolved on the following ;—Queen-street: 1. nea, King-street;.2. between Neill's stable 1 ' and Bannister's orchard; 3. Renoll-st 8 corner; 4. .'between' Mill creek and. Royal Hotel; 5. Kurupuni triangle. Chapel-street: 6. junction ofPerry-st. and Chapel-st,, opposite the Club Hotel in Chapel-st, Hall-street: 7. junction of Chapel and Hall-st., near Wesleyan Church j 8. 'junction' of Hall-st. and Lincoln Boad: flailway station;.gates.. :.., .■.-..'.■ '' Cr Price proposed-the adoption of the report and said the cost would -be about 150, and thought that Maaterton was the poorest lighted town of its size in the colony. . The Mayor thought it would be a. good thing for the town, and the Com. mittee. ought to call/for tenders: for lighting, • - ;: ' ; ■'■'■'- "■ •■••'■•■'.''•
Or Gapper seconded the, adoption, and saii in Titnaru the lamps cost about j63 3s, and were very jpod ones,'
especially when compared with the total post with the lamp on it. ; Cr Heron said he would remind .the other Councillors of the long overdraft atthebank,and thought the lighting might stand over for a twelve month, ' Or Hessey moved that the Council send Home for about twenty lamps, but that they must be made to alter if gas was wanted, :. . - ■
The Clerk was instructed to enquire prices from different establishments in Wellington. ' .: : V The Mayor said Mr Bunny had been instructed to defend the Council in the case Bentley v Masterton Borough Council, and Mr Brown had been sub-' pffinaeias aptness by the plaintiff.' ' The, meeting then adjourned.
