A seam of coal 12ft thick has been traced in the Grey district, near Blackball creek, for lialf a mile. Coke has been tested and highly spoken of. A Greymouth firm obtained the lease, Some excellent specimens of copper ore have been brought from Malvern district.
Auckland, Thursday. Major Jackson and VV. P. Buckland intend to stand for Vaipa. An immense number of petty latencies are reported recently. The police have arrested the members of a properly organised thieving gang. The Waikato Farmers' Co-operative Association have opened butcher's shops for the sale of their meat in Auckland. They are making extensive arrangements to avoid Middleman's profit respecting all produce. ■
A man named Dewson was arrested last night for brutality. . He had a son of fifteen bound to the ceiling, and was flogging him with another rope, The boy was fearfull ill-used, and was taken to the police station for protection. i
