The Chairman in an exhaustive speech, full of statistics, laid the matter fairly before the meeting. He had, with the Engineer, been over all the proposed roads, and had asked him to prepare plans' and specifications of such roads and bridges of as cheap a description as it would be advisable to construct, and he was sorry .to say he was much disappointed as to the result. - The sum total of such plans as Mr King had prepared, amounted to a little oirer"-£2,000... It; was"for the settlers themselves to say whether they should proceed to borrow such an amount. He should much like fo.i the good of all concerned to see the roads made, but ho considered the nnio.pt excessive.

The work could be done much cheaper iu the old style, He objected to expensive surveys, the only results, were pegs and paper. Mr Sparks spoke of the indifferent way work had been done in time back,

Mr Applin thought it would lie much better to rate themselves higher at once, do the work their own way, clear themselves in four years, mid be independent of the Government. .He did not like to carry a burden for fifteen vears.

After various remarks from other settlers, Mr Callister moved,'that [the proposal to borrow money bo adjourned to that day twelve months.

Mr Uooth thought the estimates might be reduced to £1,500. Mr Clark moved as an amendment, that if the estimates were reduced to £1,500 that they should borrow the money," He thought tt high time that those settlers who had no roads to their laud should have them made for them,

Upon a show of hands being taken Mr Oallister's amendment was declared carried, therefore the proposal was shelved for twelve months.

The meeting was then brought to a close,
