(UNITED.PRESS ASSOCIATION.) THE ORMONDVILLE MURDER.
Napier Tuesday. In the Supreme Court, Robert Collins for horse-stealing, a verdict of not guilty was returned. John Birbeck lor larceny of jewellery from hotel, was sentenced to twelve months'imprisonment. R.H, Edwards charged with murdering his wife and four children at Ormond ville was pub on his trial. On the question "guilty or not guilty" being asked, prisoner remained silent about a,minute. The'question being again put, prisoner replied " guilty." There was a deathlike silence, which was broken by the prisoner adding," guilty, but I was not in my. right mind," This was taken as a plea of not guilty. Tho trial lasted all day. Gisborne, June 9. At tho nomination to-day, the show of hands was as follows!—Rees, 58; Locke, 38; Gannon, 46. Rees was the only candidate present and made a long speech stating that the Government, were doing all they could to keep him out of the House. ■ Dunedin, Jiine 9.
A mau named Frederick Nicholls committed suiicide in Castle-street this evening by taking laudanum, He had been drinking heavily, and was brought home drunk during the day. He called his wife into tho bedroom, and bidding her good-bye drank the laudanum, which she thought was wine. He afterwards camo out info the kitchen, and smoked his pipe dying nearly two hours afterwards,
