TRIAL OF TOMLISON AND HAYWOODS SHEEP DIP.

At the invitation .of Mr Hay ward, a large number of Book masters and others mot at Mr Shand's' Abbotsford Farm yesterday to witness a public trial oj the efficiency o£ the "glycerine" sheop-dip. as manufactured by his firm. A number of crossbred sheep belonging; to various persons' were specially selected with, a yiew tp thoroughly test the qualities 6f : the dip.'/ They were of all ages, and were all more or less in.a bad state- with ticks and other noxious parasites. /MrHaywardshad the bath (which contained rome 2000 gallons of the mixture) ready for commencing operations when the party from town arrived," and shortly before noon the process of dipping "commenced. The first, lot .operated, upon was aflock of 92 - these were put through iti seven and a-half minuted : that when the eheep run up a narrow

race, at the terrailiatipriof; wliieh, there is a trap, the> "weight forces^downttbe trap,';:the sheep are immersed in.the liquid, and, awimmiDg along, come into the dripping pens up, sloping gangway. Mr Heenan's mixed lob of 428 sheep were then operated' upon, there being some "subjects" in\the flock calculated to test the poweratof aoy sheep dipping composition, and ilt the end of the half-hour, when they: we're all in the dripping-pens, the ejifectual qualities of the dip in killing |he..tick;: and, lice were thoroughly exemplified* A culled lot of 262 from the : : worst of Mr Shand's flock • then came notice, and this lot were put through under a quarter of ah hour without any hurry or, bustle, the result being tho same.as: in'rfpreyioas cases,; ■ ■;. Mr. Peter Grant, (Gowrie) had in tho yards a flock of j 515 whioh were successfully operated' 1 upon,'and although the time occupied —viz,, 35 minutes--was remarkably, short, yet as in the former cases the dip was effectual in killing all the yerniin. Mr Grant of Olareinch, \ had a special selection of 200, and a quarter of an hour saw the last one undergoing its temporary immersion. Mr Buchanan's contingent ,of 280 went through in the fastest (ime, notwithstanding the low state of the mixture in the bath; and the whole 1777 were thus successfully operated upon, and with results that satisfied every flockowner as to the qualities .of the glycerine dip to perforin the object it. is manufactured to accomplish, ;; The; glycerine dip, as manufactured by Messrs Tomliuson and Hay ward, is distinct from other compositions for a similar purpose. All the other dips hitherto compounded are more or less poisonous; but the principal factor in this dip is its non-poisonous nature, a fact which in itself is a great commandation, while its glycerine qualities are beneficial both in increasing the. lustre of the wool, and retaining or restoring the general health of the sheep, or even any other animal affected with parasites, Despite the number of sheep operated upon during l;he three hours which the trial lasted there was not a single ono lost, and no more than ordinary care was taken to bring about such a result. The trial was throughout most successful, and thoroughly testing in its character, and thoso present were most critical in their observations and examinations. After the trial the visitors. were most hospitably entertained at a substantial luncheon that was provided by Mr Shand, and tho occasion was taken by Mr Hayward to heartily thank Mr Shand for his kind : ness in placing his apparatus at his (Mr Hay ward's) disposal,' and Mr Carter referred to Mr Shand's willingness on all occasions to place at anyone's disposal any part of his property with a view of testing any new arrangement, of whatever kind, in the interest of agricultural or pastoral matters.

The party also had a walk round a portion of the estate, with a view of inspecting a number of American gang and sulky ploughs which Mr Shand has started, and all expressed themselves as being satisfied with the working of the implements, As the day was throughout fine, the contingent from town had a very pleasant outing.
