TINUI.

(prom our own correspondent.) I n the building line our small town shows signs of advancement. The now State school, just erected by Mr Clegliom, is I neat and substantial structure, anil reflects great credit on the contractor for the manner in which it is finished off. An office for the' Road Board is also iu course of construction on a site at the corner of Andrew-st,, adjacent to the Catholic Church; The new residence of Messrs Maunsell Bros, is also nearing completion. Our school, under the management of Mr Yeats, is progressing favorably, and the average attendance is higher than for some time past. It is stated, however, that Mr Yeats contemplates leaving the district, if true, this is to be regretted, for since his short regimu ho has won the confidence of parents, and is very popular with tho children, and is evidently tho right man in the right place. The School Committee now invite applic.tions for a sewing mistress. I can in agine that august body being somewhat perplexed in coming to a wise decision 011 this matter! It might be as well for them to invite some of tho matrons of the locality to examine the various samples of hemming, felling, buttonholing, that aro sure to be forwarded as testimonials by tho fair aspirants.

Our roads are in very good order, and a large amount of traffic from Masterton and-Taueru continues to pass through Tinui en route for tho Upper Whareama and neighboring localities,

At the invitation of Mr W. Andrew a number of footballers met at the Tinui Hotel, on Saturday last, and tho initial steps were taken to form a club. About fifteen members joining in the room. A match with the Masterton players is talked of for the 24th inst. I would counsel a little practice'first, for although our men are strong of limb, thoy may bo very deficient in wind.

The meeting advertised some time since to form a jockey club, came to nought, on account of the small attendance; another attempt will, I understand, be made soon to effect this , object, and it is to bo hoped the lovers of sport will muster in 'numbers, If the public wish to secure the course offered by Mr Andrew, and to put it in order, no time should be lost, as there will be a quantity of work in the shape of ploughing to perform, The election of Mr 11. Meredith to represent ITo. 1 subdivision of the Castle Point Road District, caused some surprise here, but as Mr J. Langdon, his opponent, did not exert himself to obtain votes, and as the largo ratepayers in tho ward apparently take no, interest it need be no matter-.for wonder. Whether the . choice of a representative having an infinitesimal interest in a re'inotfl corner of the subdivision will prove beneficial to the majority remains to be seen. : It is said that- Messrs Holmes, of Tiraumea, and F. Taylor, of Manawa will come forward to fill the vacancies on the Road Board occasioned by the resignations of Messrs J. Williams and Telford.

A chequo issued by the Road Board here has been made the subject of exexperiments by. some, individual of forging proclivities. The cheque in question was made only for id 4s,'this ,was concocted into £,l -14, and; in - its .amended and more valuable form was cashed at the bank of New Zealand, Wellington. This' financing is' .evidently not the work of a hardy handed son of toil, but by some one skilled in the art of penmanship." Persons with bank accounts would do well in future not to put figures; in the body of cheques they draw, but express the value m words closely written together.
