NEWSPAPER STATISTICS.

From the " Newspaper Press Directory," for 18S4, we extract the following on the present position of the - newspaper Press:—There are now published in the United Kingdom 10115 newspapers, distributed; ns follows: England London, 401 : provinces, 1177-1578; Wales, 80; Scotland, 181; Ireland, 156; Isles, 20. Of

these there arc—l 37 daily papers published in England, four daily papers published in Wales, 22 daily papers published in Scotland, 15 daily papers published in Ireland, and one daily paper published in'the British Isles, On reference to the first edition of this useful directory, for the year 184G, wo find the following interesting facts, viz,:—that in the year there were published in tho United Kingdom oSlrjoiirnals; of these 14 were issued daily—viz., 12 in England and two in Iroland; but in 1881 thoro are now established and circulated 2,015 papers of which no less than 179 aro issued daily, showing that tho Press of the country 1m more than trebled during the last 38 years, The increase in daily papers has been still more remarkable, the daily issues standing 179 against 14 in 1816. The magazines now in course of publication including the quarterly reviews, number 1,260, of which 332 are of a decidedly religious character representing the Church of England, Wesleyiuis, Methodists, Rnptists, Indepehdants, Komon Catholics, and other Christian communities,
