It lias transpired that the Oriental Bank is indebted to tlio -Victorian Government to the extent of nearly half -a - million of money; Wo regret to hear this, because tlio fact of a Bank suspending with so large a portion of Government money in its hands is likely to intensify tlio existing depression throughout our • colonies by shaking public confidence in the finaiiml 'nri'angampnts of tllß va,l'ioi>S"Australasian Governments. In New,:Ze'aland the effect of this failure is likely to catiso less disturbance than in any other of the Australasian colonies, but oven here it is likely to be felt indirectly, and tlio fall of the Oriental Bank must be regarded as a sign of bad financial weather.
