THE GENERAL ELECTION.

. The general election, which" must take place in November, unless the Ministry are defeated during the coming session, already excites someattention, Numbers of men are talked'ofas probable candidates. For Wellington City, Messrs Fisher," Hutchison, Johnston, Duthie, Stafford, Newinan,Buller, Edwards, Kennedy, McDonald, and several, others are mentioned.. The Foxtori seat will be contested by Mr J. Gr. Wilson, the present member, 'by Mr Izard, and probably another, as it has a long, straggling constituency, with many conflicting interests! . Mr Mason, M.H,R,,for the Butt, will havo to fight Mr Fitzherbert, a son of the Spoaker of the Legislative Council.- For the two Wairarapa seats, Messrs Beetham, Biichahanjßunriy, Burton Boys|Lowes and Hawkins are likely candidates. In Hawke's Bay Mi-Tanner' will attempt the task of defeating Mr. W.. C. .Smith, and'in Olive Mr,SuttonahdCaptaiu Russell will fight their Lattlq over

again. It is considered pretty certain that Mr Ormond will be returned for Napier, even if Mr Sheehan or Mr Buchanan fight him for it. The Hon. W. Johnston will leave for England after the session, and this will give a clear field, for the Manawatu, which constituency Mr MoArthur, off eliding and Messrs Eusaeli and Linton, of Palmerston/will woo. Eangitikei is not thoroughly satisfied with Mr Stevens, and three or four persons are spoken of as being likely to offer them-' selves for election. .Wanganui will be warmly contested by Messrs Watt, HuMison, Ballanco and Carson. Mr Bryce seems to have a strong grip on the affections of his electors! pajor Atkinson will certainly meet with opposition, but it seems scarcely probable that any candidate new to fame could beat.the Premier, who has certainly not neglected Ms district. The uames abovegiven are those which arc most talked of at the present hour, and is such they are worthy of note. |Be fcween this; aucl the general election many things will happen and many other men will try to discover what shanecs they may have, It is asserted that Sir William Pox would very much like to have a seat in this Parliament, to; explain and, if necesary.'to. defend iiis,report on : tho,. WestCOastNative ands; but that;he; would only stand if mopposed: if ho adheres .to.,this ieteVminatioti. ho will never again enter ;he House of Representatives, for the jubliciras will always find someone to ■un against him. It is also said that ie would not care foraseat in the quiet louse of Lords. Public opinion seems 10 point strongly, to a desire to see tho •e-election of many of the noted poliicians who were rejected or did not ifand at the last general election, imong whom are Messrs Stout Eichardon> Ormond, Pitt, Eeador, Wood, kllance and Gisborne Lyttelton Knies. ; ;
