MEETINGS OF CREDITORS.

On Monday the Deputy Official Assignee held meetings of creditors in the old Court room in the estates of Messrs Harvey and Sons and D. Knight. Tim meeting of tho latter was called foi 11 o'clock, but there not being a quorum present at that hour it was adjourned till four p.m.

At three o'clock somo seven or eight creditors in the estate of HARVEY & SONS

were in attendance, the Deputy Official Assignee (My W. Sellar) presiding. The Chairman stated that he had sold a portion of the debtors' stock as soon as they had applied for adjudication, realising somo £90.. The whole .of the property of the debtors was under mortgage to tho Bank of New Zealand and New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency for £2480. Tim assets were estimated at £2726, which would leave, with the amount in hand, about £135 to be divided among the unsecured creditors. The Official Assignee had arranged with tho Bank . Loan and Mercantile Co, to realise all the securities, and the results might be larger than the estimate.' One hundred of tho sheep estimated at !8s each had been sold at 13s 6cl each. Mr Caselberg- moved, Mr Perry seconded, That the official assignee examine the business transactions of the debtors for tho past two years, and if it was found their failure was not through reckless trading, extravagant living, or incompetency, the creditors recommend their immediate discharge. —Carried. The meeting then adjourned to the 14 th insfc, to receive tho assignee's report. D. KNIGHT. There was also a good attendance of creditors at the meeting of this debtor. The deputy official assignee reported the steps he had taken up to the prosent, and his action was approved. He 1 had sold all the available assets in the estate, which realised £141.' Meredith by proxy, submitted the debtor to a severe examination, f during tho course of which he admitted that he had purchased Mr Meredith's and Mi Hood's cattle and paid other creditors with the money they had realised, He admitted that that was not the action of an honest man, but said he could not help himself, He wasbcing pressed nil round, and thought he should get enough from his friends to pay Mr Meredith. Ho had given ■ £GO for the horse Mountain Deer, and' sold it for 125. Had lost £250 by him, and about another £IOO by a horse named Miss Danebury. He attributed his present fix to losses in horso racing. It was understood when he bought Mr Hood's cattle that it was to be a cash transaction, Mr Beard said the debtor had really put his hand into Messrs Meredith and Hood's pockets to pay other crcdi- . tors, Mr Heckler asked the debtor if he had not paid Mr Kimberley a large sum for sheep just before the £IOO bill given to him (Mr Heckler) fell duo. The debtor stated he had bought Mr Kimberloy's sheep on commission. Mr Beard : Is it not true that Mr Kimberley threatened to place the matter in the hands of the police if you did not immediately pay him for tho sheep ? Tho debtor denied this, Ho had paid Mr Kimberley as soon as he sold the sheep to other parties, Mr Hood moved-(l) That Mr Knight's statements as to hisaffairs and dealings prior to his bankruptcy are of such on unsatisfactory character that the assignee be requested to thoroughly investigate his transactions; (2) That if, on such investigation, it is found that the debtor has mado himself amenable to bo prosecuted for fraudulent bankruptcy, tho assignee be requested to institute such prosecution. Mr Beard seconded.—Carried unanimously, Tho meeting then adjourned to tho 28th inst.
