Mr McKenzie addressed his constituents at Palmerston (South) last night. His speech dealt chiefly with the land administration. He asserted that with the territory at his disposal, Mr Rolleston should bo able to settle the country faster than at the rate of a thousand a year. His liberality was instanced by the way iii which, in defiance of tho wishes of the public, he looked Otfitjo runs against settlement, The Ministry had allowed dummyism to floimsh extensively in. Otago, and had -permitted jflr Stout and the Press to fight that,battle.. He severely condemned the reappointment of members of the Otago linnd Board, and said, whoever heard of a jury that disagreed" being called 011 to re-try tho ease, He also wished to know why no-steps wore taken to punish those guilty of making false declarations in, connection with the Silver Peak cases, He was in favor of immediate dissolution, He received a vote of confidence, and was afterwards presented with a purse of 172 sovereigns in recognition of his efforts towards the bona fide settlement of land. Mr W. P. Moatlcontemplates eontesting tlie .Rodney election with Mr Seymour George. At Jilie inquest on the hotly of Patrick Moran, who died, in the gaol with four ribs 'discovered fractured, a verdict to the effect that death was accelerated by accidental fracture of ribs, and the police and prison authorities are acquitted of blame, but the jury expressed a conviction- that Moran's dying statement was that he asked admission at the hospita!': and Jiad been refused. Dr Bondlio'use, surgeon of the hospitalj in his evidence denied this, alid,-said Moran had not applied for admission,. nor was there any record of his having done so.
Dunedin, Saturday.
A firo occurred on the farm of Hood and Crawford, at Clerksville, on Monday. Two stacks, one of wheat and one of oats, were destroyed, The loss was £IBO, and not covered by insurance.
A five-stalled stable and room attached, valued at £SO, and belonging to Jonathan T.ei'ford,: of Albert Downs, was destroyed by fire on the 27th ult. The property was insured in the Victoria office for £4O. It is supposed that some swagsman had been,sleeping in the hut and left a fire burning, The Daily Times to-day suggests that Sir Julius Yogel should be asked to address a public meeting here.on the present depression and political outlook.
