CARTERTON TOWN BOARD.

(From the Observer). The usual monthly meeting of the above Board -was hold at the Council Chambers, Carterton, on Monday afternoon, CommissionorsFairbrother (Chairman), Parker, Campbell, Callistev, and Yickerstaff, being present. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the Treasurer reported a credit balance of <£9l2s Bd.

■ It was resolved that permission be granted Mr K. Dixon, sen., to erect a verandah to, the new building next Mr. Allen's store.

Accounts amounting to about £ls were then passed for payment. It was resolved—That it is' the intention of the Board to strike a general rate of Jd in the.£ at its next meeting for the year April, 1884, to March 31st, 1885, and that Mr Wolters be authorised to receive payment of such rate.

Resolved—That Mr Oliver be appointed to repair the main road near Mr Mill's flour mill. It was resolved to ask the TaratahiCarterton Road Board to contribute a share of the expense-.for repairs and culvert on Bel ' : The Chairman informed the meeting, through Mr Buchanan,; M.H.R., that Mr Bryce would be willing to receive a deputation re gravel pit at an early date, and it was decided that the whole Board form the deputation. The report of the Inspector of Nuisonces was then read :

Gehtiehbn,—lnpresenting this my quarterly report, I beg to state that ther« has been no fines for breaohes of tho by-laws during the quarter, and I am happy to say the by-laWs; qeem to be very .fairly acted up to by the public. The greatest nuisance that exists at the present time is the large number of useless dogs kept'in town,—l am, &c,, W. Piiilpott. • -

In answer to a question as to whether a by-road could not be open, as the cattle traffic seemed to be increasing, the Chairman pointed out that several contemplated' works would nearly, absorb all the available funds for some time to come, but that should any still remain, it would be expended for that purpose. ■ • • •

In the course of a discussion that ensued as to the carrying on of the ditch on the main road to Hodgiris' hotel, it ' whs pointed out' that something should he'done with tho road below the hotel, as the people paid their rates and Bhould receive some benefit. '
