WELLINGTON IN 1846.

In the old times they were sometimes impatient in Australia and New Zealand when the English mails were .overdue. We copy an extract from the Australasia published in the Now Zealand Spectator and Cook's Strait Guardian, under date of Wednesday, September 23rd, 1846:-'' News from England. Bannatyne and Co., W. W. Taylor, "W. S, Loxley, Jns. Inglis, Johnston and Moore, Robert Waitte, W. Flyger, P. M. Harvey, William Lyon, J. J, Taine, John Wade, James Smith, W, B, Rhodes, Samuel & Joseph, having all gone to their long homes. Wo find Wm. Lyon advertising 100 dozen Nelson ale in quantities 1 .0 suit families, Settlers are also informed that they may have a moderate quantity of carrot seed gratis by applying at the Wellington Tavern. Messrs Clifford and Vavasour supply' wool packs and corn sacks made of Now Zealand flax. Joseph Henderson cautions persons against buying sheep or cattle depasturing on Table Island, better known as Mana Island, in Cook Straits; likewise, cattle and sheep depasturing at Morraki, on the Middle Island, Ridgways and Hickson advertise potatoes and hay, grown- ; »fc the';. Hutt; also, a few tons ot pvle whale oil for Home consumption, Mr Taine promises to give further particulars to any intending purchaser of 10 acres of cleared land, with or,without 10 head, of cattle, He states- that the land is: undisputed by the Natives, the presentproprietor having cleared, crapped, and now in occupation of the same- A person as nursery maid, and to attend: upon a lady, is requested to apply to .Mrs Crawford, and in the family of Mr Justice Chapman,- at Karori, a nursery mind is wantod, who must have had some experience in the management of children. As a safe guard, we suppose, she must apply, in the first instance, to Mr Strang, at the Court House. W, B, Rhodes and Co; are buyers of lean stock for cash! and a nota, bene states that "A few fat cattle would not be objected to." A valuable freehold property is for sale; being that comfortable family residenco', situated on Te Aro Flat, at present in the occupation of James Smith, Esq., consisting of four apartments, kitchen and outhouses, with one-eighth 'of an acre of garden ground; apply to Thomas Hendry or to W. Lyon. And again, Samuel and Joseph have on sale, among other things, men's blue cloth caps, waterproof jackets and trousers, south-westers, moukey jackets, reefing jackets with cross pockets, cauvas and; duck trousers, a bale navy-blue prints—rather a nautical stock. On September 20th, the schooner Star of China, 112 tons, Wood, arrived from Sydney with general cargo, and passengers, Mr Mr Christian, and Mr Mason. On the 21st, the schooner Fidele, 6 tons, Cur-, rey, from Ohau.. On the 22nd, H.M&, Calliope, 26 guns, Captain- Stanley,' from Pororua, On Friday the Stains Castle passed through Cook's Straits with a fair wind on her 'liomewStff, voyage. She has a great number/of, passengers and some of the officers and fifty of the crew of the French Frigate La Seine, which was wrecked .at New Caledonia, H.M.S, Carysfoofc, 26, guns, Captain George S&ymour, sailed from Sydney for Auckland and Valparaisci on-August 29tlu—Fielding Star, : ;
